I only feel safe when I'm back home in Singapore, as well as in Tokyo. I feel that Toronto has gotten worse ever since I arrived here from Singapore, I feel that I cannot be in 90% of Toronto once it gets dark. The only area I would be outside after dark by myself is Yorkville, but even then, there's plenty of nutcases hanging around. I go to a lot more areas at night, but only with friends, and even then I still don't feel very safe. I live in the suburbs (Mississauga), and don't feel safe at night either.

Melbourne is pretty safe, but as with most cities - you are best to be sensible about when and where you go at night. I walk to and from work everyday, sometimes home in the dark at night - makes me walk faster for sure! usually there's lots of people about tho.

Not safe at all, just last week I tripped over an uneven sidewalk and almost fell. I was terrified for minutes on end. What is this world coming to?

I try to steer away from areas that I deem not safe, so I stay home most of the time.

When I was stationed in Thailand a buddy and I went downtown in Phuket. At 3am on Saturday we walked into a convenience store and he got a beer. He paid for it and opened it, taking a sip, then offering a sip to the cute cashier. We walked outside, open beer, and walked literally down the center line of the road. As we walked by a traffic cop we waved at him and he waved back, smiling. My friend said, "Haha, and we call AMERICA a free country!" as we toasted the officer.

I think some countries can do that because they put more weight on personal responsibility instead of expecting the government to fill their needs.

That's a great story... I have a similar one.

A buddy and I decided to take a trip across Canada so we signed up with a firm that gets cars from central Canada to the west coast. We ended up driving some guy's Honda Prelude (we nicknamed the 'qualude') to Vancouver. If you've ever driven across the prairie provinces, you know the Trans Canada Highway is dead flat and straight for miles and miles.

I was cruising along, likely suffering from a bit of white-line-fever, at about 170km/hr. I didn't see the RCMP car pull up behind me (which is amazing considering how flat it is out there) but when I realized it, it was too late to slow (and dangerous). My heart went into my throat as they pulled out to pass us. As they drew even with us, they smiled and waved, and kept on going, pulling away slowly.

THAT was very cool. I guess they figured on a pancake flat highway that is straight for more than 100 miles, we were okay.

Why were you going so slow?

It was a Honda Prelude and it topped out not much past 170.

Unlike my superior German car, which I have found is governed to 220km/hr. I've read on my VeeDub forum that with the governor removed, it'll comfortably cruise at 260km/hr.

Damn government.
