Doesn't anyone recall what Rolex does when it completely revamps its model line? They always release it in precious metal only. The stainless steel model comes 2 years later. They did it for the 2005 Sub, the 2014 Daytona & the latest Yacht Master. So just buy what you want right now.

Apart from a new movement, it would be interesting to see a new color combo on the bezel as I've seen on some photoshop or supposed leaks (e.g. blue bezel/black dial, etc).

Why? Changes are likely to be minimal.

This is a great post because:

a. There are no reasonably priced used 116610LNs, as most are selling over MSRP.

b. There will be a huge waitlist for a new sub if in fact released.

If you buy now and those lugs are slimmed down on the new model you may be sorry.

Only if slimmed lugs are seen as an improvement.
I like the sub as it is and I only see a movement change coming personally

OP, I had the same issue a few months ago. This is the decision I made and why. I bought a submariner. If Rolex didn't modify the sub this year, then I'm happy because I have the watch to wear. I personally think that they did modify the sub this year and IMO, this is what they changed: (1) updated the movement to the 3235 (2) made some modification to the case, again IMO, the lugs. Maybe we'll find out soon. If I really like the new model, I can sell mine if I can get the new one (which is unlikely) and maybe lose a little money. I don’t think the current model will drop in price that much. Since I probably won’t be able to get the new model any time soon, probably for months or years, I have the current model to wear. So far I think its been a good decision. We’ll see!!!

Get a Yachtmaster now and get the better case and updated movement and a more useful bezel.

I'd just get one now if you like it and can handle the premium.

A) They don't update it - You made the right decision
B) They update the movement - There is nothing wrong with the exisiting movement
C) They update the case and movement - You wont get one for years without a huge premium, better off buying now and trading in 5-10 years time if prefer the newer version as it "may" be available by then.

It's simple for me. On the theory that we never really know what tomorrow may bring, I'd rather stop and smell the roses, and enjoy something that I'm passionate about right now (like my current 116610LN) rather than wait to see what the future may not bring. I'm not a pessimist or fatalist...just a pragmatist and realist!

Live in the moment and GET THAT DANG SUB. When Rolex does decide to release the next generation, if you like it enough, well...you can figure the rest out.

Anyone agree?

I have to wonder too if Rolex were to make any design changes, if they wouldn't be focused on making a wider bracelet than the 20mm currently and taking a 22mm bracelet to the Sub similar to the DSSD changes. Seems to also work well with the Black Bay. I do like the current design myself though and think many years left in it as is...

I think it's tough to make a hard and fast rule since Rolex has only done this 2 or 3 times over the last 30 years per watch line mostly. Last time the Sub was updated you are right that PM came first. When Rolex updated the GMT Master with the 3285, SS update was similar timing as some of the PM references. So seems at least more recently (last 20 years) that Rolex introduces PM first when moving to a new digit like 5 to 6 digit, but is mixed approach when changing movements or small redesigns within 5 and now 6 digits. Should be exciting to see what they do with the next Subs whenever they come...

What if they update the Sub and it sucks? Everyone waiting to see about the update will be scouring for the 116610. Kinda what happened with the 116710-126710 BLNR last year (although I think the “Batgirl” was a slight improvement). If you like the current sub get it.

I bought now (116610). It’s perfection, and I rather have the current movement-

My prediction is they release the 126610 with no change aside from the movement. If they do anything earth shattering, I’ll add the new to the collection.

Nobody knows what Rolex is going to do. There will be thousands of speculations here but no one knows for sure. The only thing that's for sure is that the only Submariners you can buy new today are 114060 and 116610.

I asked this same question two years ago, just before Basel, and there were many many rumours that it woul dbe updated. Guess what, no update and I bought a Sub just under two years ago and so glad I never waited.

Gotta love these predictions. I mean, if these aren't a lock to happen, what is?

OP, I wouldn't hold off getting the Sub. Any changes will likely be minimal, despite whatever random predictions people throw out on a blog, and you'll have to get in a nice, long waiting line for it.
