Help a friend pick a watch
A buddy who really respects my timepiece knowledge wants some advice. He really respects everyone here (yes, even you JJ) because we are a brain trust. What "I" know is what "we" know. He has been looking at a Tag watch, and the BANK OF MRS will only authorize him a US$1000. expenditure. His question:
If you were only going to spend $1000 on a watch and you wanted something stylish, but rugged, and gave the impression of high-end/high quality, what would you choose? What say ye? |

I would look to a used Omega Speedy or possibly a used Chopard Mille Miglia. They can both be had for around a grand in US bux.
He may want to look at a Tissot SeaStar, great value in a mechanical for about US$500, the Seiko Monster is a great mechanical value and can be had quite cheaply (under $200). That's if he's looking to go mechanical. If he wants quartz, I would say TAG makes an indestructible dive watch that can be had for under a grand. |

A Tag quartz 2000, like John said, is just indestructible. A used Omega is also a great idea, they make some incredibly durable yet good looking watches.

I am coaching him towards Omega -- he knows he may go a little over his set price, but then again we are in a great country for watch shopping, and I am sure he will make it up to the bank in compounded interest. ;-)

I'd go with the Omega SMP - probably can get one with the co-axial at very close to his price point.
Is he open to previously enjoyed instead of BNIB?

I would vote Oris TT1 (or whatever model he likes best) if his better half is very strict about the $1,000.00 limit, Omega or Breitling if she is willing to be a bit flexible.
