Is It Time For Service?

After my father passed away last year, I was given his Milgauss 1019 (CERN face, serial #1636702) that he wore practically every day. I called the Dallas service center and their records show the last time it had been serviced was in 2005. Do any of you have any guidelines for a service interval for a watch of this vintage? Also, I notice when I adjust the time backwards that the second hand will "jump" backwards as well. Is this common?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rule of thumb is every 5-7 years. Unless it's has any issues or you just want to get it cleaned up, I would wait a little longer since it's only been 4 years.

On my watch, when I adjust the time back, the second had does stop or go backwards. To my knowledge, this is common and normal for non-hacking movements.

That is completely normal. In fact, my 1968 DateJust manual says that is how you set the seconds.

I'd guess it's fine as far as service. How is it running? Accurately?

The watch runs like a charm and I haven't had any accuracy issues.

One other question, the glass has a small chip in it, is this something the service center could replace or is the watch too old?

You might take it by Dallas Watch on Midway to see what they think about the crystal. You won't run the risk of having RSC or an AD tell you that it has to be serviced before they'll touch the crystal.

Man what a great reference. Not only is the watch a collector's dream, but priceless given it's history for you.

Unless you wear the watch hard I think you have a bit to go before service. I would follow the suggestions above about the crystal.

Chamosa Watch Repair on Preston Road in Dallas is one of the most respected watchmakers in the metroplex. He's a certified Rolex watchmaker and worked for the Rolex Service Center for 10 years. He is very, very honest and reasonable on his prices. He specializes in the vintage Rolexes. If you need anything additional, send me a private message.
