Which GPS?
I need to replace my GPS. I had a Garmin GPSmap 60CSX with additional Mapsource maps installed on a micro SD card but it was recently stolen out of my truck by scumbag teenagers who probably traded it for a bag of pot.
The 60CSX was a terrific unit. I used it on my dual sport motorcycle (Honda XR650) with no vibration issues. It was waterproof, handheld, took AA batteries and could also be plugged into an auto cig lighter. Unfortunately there were also a few instances where it would send us to the wrong location or send us the long way - though I suspect that was caused by Mapsource software glitches - not the GPS unit itself. My only other gripe was that the screen is small. As much as it KILLS me to spend money buying another GPS, considering I had a perfectly good one that I bought and paid for and street cretins stole, I need a new GPS unit with all the same features: waterproof, rugged, battery power etc. to use on my bike and in my truck and I don't want to break the bank. If anyone has any recommendations I'd be glad to hear all about them.

Bill, you might want to take a look at the NAVI line from Garmin. Very versatile.

Men love their GPS systems. Women might mention them in passing but I think men see them as an extension of themselves.

I am not a GPS person however my son has to drive San Diego all the time for my company so I bought him a:
http://www.circuitcity.com/applicati...062&CatId=3422 I had to make a call to my son to get the Garmin information before I could post this and sorry for the pokes on the thread. Circuit City has some great deals. This Garmin Nuvi 1350T is what I picked up for him. Now the key issue that is important is the password feature which I had to use my laptop to set. This way if someone steals the Garmin from his truck like yours it is useless. I also inscribed my company name on the Garmin and the phone number. Now like I said I am not a GPS person however the two main points are using the password and your name. I was also able to put in the Garmin my company and the phone number when you power up the unit. So it becomes worthless and my son has a habit for loosing things so I mounted to his center console and he cannot remove it without some tools. I hope some of these point will help you on your next Garmin purchase. BTW I keep black towels in my truck and I drape them over my stuff in the cab so it is impossible to see at night and it does not draw attention. |

If you aren't a Smartphone guy, you might consider going that route.
I have a TomTom that's a few years old, but I never use it anymore. My Sprint device (Palm Pre) has the Nav service free with my voice/data service. Most other carriers charge ~$10 per month for that service, but it is available. You get realtime traffic, weather alerts, etc... in addition to the core GPS function. Also, the new Droid on Verizon and the Google Nexus One smartphones have free turn-by-turn GPS included if you have those devices. |

Garmin eTrex Vista HCx is a great handheld replacement if you want to stay in that form factor. I use mine on my Harley, in the truck, and out hiking, etc.

Not sure what you mean here Faith. I guess I could use a map but I just find it so inconvenient. I am an outside salesperson and the GPS is invaluable. I know quite a few women in my field who use them also.

If you were happy with that model, then I would try and replace it with the same model. I have a Garmin Nuvi 1300 and it is very nice. It does have a Bicycle mode but I think it would only change your routing to a more pedestrian route. It also has pedestrian mode if your sightseeing in a new location. It comes preloaded with City Navigator NT which has millions of points of interest. But its not waterproof. It also has an internal battery that lasts up to 3 hours without external power. I like the 4.3 inch display. Another feature about this model, it has a security locking feature. If someone steals it, they won't be able to use it. Its has a very thin profile and is easily put in a pocket like a cell phone.

The more expensive Garmins (>500.00) are so accurate, last winter my buddy had one that we used to find ghost towns out west, and a lot of the time we weren't on paved roads! I got the Lats. and Longs. from a govt. website to input into the Garmin!

Hey Rick, That sounds pretty wild. Did you find any of these "ghost towns" and if so, was there anything left there?

I had a Garmin Nuvi 200 for years that worked just fine. Just bought a newer Nuvi 255w to replace it. I've tried TomToms and other GPS products but none could hold a candle to Garmin.

Anyway, our trip took us down along the Rio Grande (Texas), New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, into the Mojave. Some towns were tourist traps, others had some cool remains along with old cemeteries next to the town. No GHOSTS though! Anyway, with this link, and the govt. website provided in the link, made founding these sites easier. I wanted to go to an airplane cemetery, but was not recommended unless you carried weapons for protection. Not worth it! http://www.ghosttowns.com/ |

I have a Tom Tom and love it, used it when I went to Florida and was much better than the Garmin that came with the hire car. Not sure about US models but the UK models have map share so you can share updates you find on roads, that are not on the Tom Tom.

I have a Garmin 260W and it will send me some odd ways on occasion, but only once it could not find an address.
I also have a one series TomTom I received as a free promotion on tires I bought. It regularly does not find names of businesses. Also, the TomTom also could not locate the address the Garmin could not locate. Last edited by Gagebuilder; 18 January 2010 at 02:14 PM.. Reason: add |

I have seen that Garmin is the most versatile unit for world travel and maps... and in case you have an iphone Copilot is a very good app.
