My Other Hobby...

Just thought I would post some shots that folks on some PC Geek / Builder sites would get a kick out of. No Macro close ups of Rolexes...But maybe I should take some Macros of my PC.

This high-end gaming rig was assembled by yours truly last year.

Enjoy

This is where it all begins. All high-quality / high-end parts...

Assembling some key components.

The CPU Socket. Waiting for an Intel Core i7 Processor. The Brains of a PC.

The CPU Specs

Processor Pins

Memory Fan and CPU Cooler Fan

Close up of the CPU Cooler...Need to keep the Silicon cool when you OverClock for speed!

Not one...but TWO Graphics cards

A see through Window

IT'S ALIVE!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!

I ditched VISTA recently. YUCK! On Windows 7 now!

Hey Rob,

I stayed up all night (after some good Illy coffee) and got it operational. Tweaking things here and there took the better part of the weekend.

Nice rig. Methinks it will be time for me to break down and build another soon. Monster i7 (especially the field of cache contained there within). . Plan on playing any Counter-Strike on that beast?

Thanks!

You know...

I have not had any luck running Steam-based games. I *think* NORTON or Win 7 64-bit is botching it up...but no go, no matter what I try.

I would if I could!

Been playing a lot of Unreal III, Batman and Resident Evil. Plays Crysis pretty well, but I suck at that game.

Good deal. Unfortunately my old rig got stolen out of my car during the move to my new house. I bought a new MBP and it actually plays Crysis fairly well on the 9600. I never have, nor will I ever use an antivirus program so I cannot help you there (I just don't get viruses ;-) ). Steam can be a real pain.....they fix one thing and break another. It has been an ongoing battle since beta. Oh well. Post some benchmark scores if you get a chance, I am curious. Again...sweet beast!

Well, it wasn't without a bit of swearing. Lucky my wife slept through it all. I actually had to send the first motherboard back as I smashed some pins.

Whoa....I missed that bit.

Harsh!

Of course it hurts to lose a rig, but hoping you used it mostly for gaming and there was no confidential data on that PC. Sorry to hear...

I dont game much so no need for crazy video for me. I do have a 30" monitor though!

I have 3 of the 640's in a raid 5 and the other in an external inclosure. The 1.5 are in a raid 1 for redundancy. The SSD drive is CRAZY fast. I primarily use my system for lightroom and photoshop. And LOTS of videos.

My last project was a HTPC that I love dearly. Your wire management is comparable to mine. That's a nice built.

Well, PCs do run WINDOWs!

I love my Mac as well, but it's not a gaming platform.

And I cannot custom assemble my own Mac!

Also, as I am sure you are well aware Speed, Windows as has been rock solid for years for those who know how to run it. I have not seen a BSOD since 98/ME that I did not cause myself by overclocking and such. Ironically the same can not be said of my OSX experience as I have had OSX crash on me a number of times where a full reinstall was necessary to fix it.

Apples Marketing > Apples Products. Not that their products are bad just that their marketing is insane.

That's a sweet rig, Bill. I'm afraid to ask how much all those components cost!

Bah. I've built a few PC's myself, and it's fun and rewarding, but calling Windoze rock-solid is a bit of a stretch. The MS bailed on Vista so quickly tells you all you need to know. Apple products are excellent, but, like Bill said, not conducive to hard-core gaming. Unless you go for a MacPro, PC's still rule the computer gaming scene.

Don't mean to start a religious war...especially since I am cross-platform

Windows 7 is nice, pretty stable.... but gaming compatibility issues are a tad frustrating. Known issues with Steam-based games - Half-Life series etc...

My Mac Notebook does photos etc....everything but gaming in a much more pleasing way to me. Love the OS /UI and classy designs.

But...Not a single BSOD on the custom Buil - yet!

John - the BOM for this rig (sans Monitor) was < $3K. Had I gone the water-cooling route...different story. I don't think the speed gains would have been worth the additional cost of custom components - water blocks etc. Would be much quieter though!

A buddy of mine who turned me on to Omega (back when I thought $2000 for a watch was insane - ) convinced me PCs go obsolete much faster than watches!

Um . . . Vista failed only because 1. People dont like change. 2. OEMs put it on computers that could not run it at the time.

MacPro for gaming . . . Yea give that a try and tell me how it goes. Actually dont waist your money, it wont go. Remember at the end of the day the hardware is the SAME. Only the OS is different.

Apple is not better than PC or visa versa, it is different. Just like a Hummer H1 is different than a BMW SUV.

I picked up a 30" Dell refurb last year for $599. I LOVE IT. It actually has a better panel than the 30" apple display. Photoshop will never be the same again once you get an IPS display. Crazy thing is it came with the same warranty as a new one. 3 year where they ship you the new one before you ship yours back.

Of course for gaming it may be a little much as its native res is 2560x1600 plus it has a slower response time than a TN panel.
