Question on 904L Steel again........
Somebody posted a thread a few weeks ago, asking about what part of the watch Rolex use the 904L steel. I think i even replied and said they use it for the case but they do not use it on the bracelets as it is probably too hard and expensive to make a bracelet out of it. Well i am wrong, as i have just picked up a catalogue of a big Jewellers here in the uk and in the advert for the DSSD, ...904L Steel.....Rolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch cases and bracelets. Now does this only apply to the DSSD because its good for anti corrosion to sea water as it has a higher chromium content, or is 904L used on every steel bracelet for every model. I am more confused than ever now.....!

They use it for the entire watch on SS models
They use it for the entire watch on SS models. It is not significantly harder than 316L and is not difficult to machine. It is more corrosion resistant and polishes to a higher degree and I believe this is why they use it. The corrosion resistance of 316L is quite acceptable for seawater so as far as diving is concerned there is little difference.
