Smart Car and a dumb driver.
That is not a car it is a lunch box with wheels.
That car could fit into my work van.

I am concerned for the safty of the driver of a smart car if they were to accidently hit a pedestrian, let alone getting "broadsided" by a semi truck that runs a red light. Deathtrap

Coffin on wheels. One pulled out in front of my van and I nearly ran over it. What a deathtrap indeed. Worse than a Yugo of the 1980's.

Not true.

The car is a rolling airbag. Plus, it has a very, very strong safety cage around the passenger compartment. With stability control and other modern safety features, it is far more safe than a Yugo.

I own a Smart car. It is amazing how much you can fit in one. The passenger's seat folds flat which allows for carrying much more than you would think.

Is the Smart car owner in the OP's pic an idiot, yup. But no more of an idiot than the "migrant laborers" that I see rolling around Northern VA with the back bumper of their pick-me-up truck almost dragging on the pavement due to being seriously overloaded.

Rolling airbag and strong safety cage might be true, but still no match for a bigger vehicle, let alone a truck like an F350 with a steel pipe bumper.....I think the safety of a Smart Car is just like smoke blown up somewhere....

Don't think the U.S. model with only 2 seats and no electric option is a good deal. Not much better than a motorcycle except you don't get wet and not as much fun.

I used to think the same until I saw one T-boned by an S class benz . the benz was totalled and the smart drove to the repairer. The smart is amazing

Just watch this video. This is just a C-Class Benz - a "small" car by US standards.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4k0FWvGoSM

After IIHS did this test (and tests with Honda Fit vs. Accord, and Toyota Yaris vs. Camry), they immediately downgraded the safety ratings on all three small cars to poor. Most everyone agrees that a large truck or SUV would be a bad pairing, but I think it surprised everyone to see how a mid-sized sedan would destroy the smaller cars.

The Fit test:

The Yaris test:

Maybe for driving around a small town locally (like a scooter), but it's frightful one to see on the interstate at 70 mph with all the big trucks around. I saw them inside the mall and was amazed at the mileage ratings. I guess I expected some phenominal mileage ratings based on their size, but was very dissapointed to see the actual ratings on the window stickers.

It's funny to see the contrast between a fully loaded smart and the empty truck side by side.

But I think that's a little dangerous, 'cause the boxes could fall off or something. As stated above, the guy should just get a pickup truck!

I think they're pretty safe too, considering their size. I've seen some clips of them getting hit pretty bad and holding up very well.

not safe in the slightest as they aren't classified as cars, they get knocked and run over by busses in London all the time :

Here in the interior of Alaska there are 2000 lb moose all over the place. It amazes me that some people buy Smart Cars up here.

They are either drinking the "Koolaid," or under the influence of Global Warming mumbo jumbo!
