Radar Detector?
Anyone have a personal recommendation for a good one? I've heard Valentine One was the best, but thought I'd ask for a few opinions/experiences here, ie, has your model saved your bacon? Or the alternative...
Thanks- Chris |

You heard right. The V1 is the best. I don't care what the other car magazine ads say, as I've had most of the brands. The V1 gives you the most info on where the radar is, and how many threats there are. You can even enter your serial number on the website after you've had it a few years to see if it needs upgraded and if so, you can pay for the upgrade without spending 400 bucks on a new one. I had a V1 since 1997-upgraded 3 times. Good luck.

We have two...one built into our car (Escort Radar Detector) and a second one (Valentine One) that is portable. I prefer the the Valentine One over the Escort because it shows you which direction the radar signal is coming from.

Those things do work, but your normally busted before you can do anything. If the cop has your vehicle in sight, and your the fastest, the signal takes a nano second to relay. They do pick up the fact that a radar is on, but most of the time your already sending a high pitch signal in the police car.
Lasers are being used more as the price decreases, Those are vehicle specific, and people don't debate them as much. Police departments, and the courts know that, so they buy the laser and save in court cost. I sit and watch my buddies write tickets all day. Radar detectors aren't much use. You can see the people slam the breaks, but it's too late. Just my 2 bits. |

V1 for me also, just wish they would put the mute button on the lighter socket like the escort.
You just have to learn how to use a detector. First off many cops leave it on all the time, this is easy. Some like to aim and shoot and on a busy road you will usually get a few beeps and then it will shut off, slow down and usually a mile or so up the road there is the officer. If you're all alone on the road and he shoots, you're busted I drove 70k miles a year for 5 years and got one ticket. Anyone have the new escort with gps?

Another option is "Trapster".
It is a free App for iPhone/Android/Palm. You turn it on and it shows your position from the GPS fix in your handset. It then speaks and shows on a map where you are in relation to reported traffic light cameras, speed traps, etc... Other users who run the software contribute by providing realtime feedback to report traps, etc... This builds a confidence index that is always being updated. Pretty sweet, especially for folks like me who live in a state where radar detectors are illegal. http://www.trapster.com/ |

Don't I wish...Our car can only manage about 469 hp...516 lb-ft torque is nice though
Can't imagine why I might really like my radar detector huh? (Sorry Paul)

Sadly, this approach does not always work :( So I find it's better to be aware of speed enforcement activities, so you can be going so slowly that there is no (reasonable) ambiguity as to whether or not you were speeding.

Just a word of advise, DONT waste your money, DO the speed limit. I can see how fast you are going on my radar before your radar detector picks me up and you can react to slow down. Example: Yesterday, my radar popped up 83MPH, then I saw it drop down to 76MPH, then down to 71MPH, I pulled the car over, and what did I see on the guys windshield? It was a radar detector....I said nothing about the radar detector, but I did ask for his autograph....haha!

Except that a good detector like the V1 will pick up you tagging other vehicles, or even sitting passively with the radar on, before you even have a visual, and the V1's arrows will tell the driver where you are.
Obviously the best method to avoid a speeding ticket is not to speed. Since this thread is about radar detectors and not about trying to lecture people, I believe the V1 is without equal. It's not the prettiest and it doesn't have the most features, but the range and directional signal arrows make it the king of the hill. |

Actually I found the V1 to false waaaaaay to often to the point that I stopped listening to it all together. I sold the V1 and bought the Escort Passport with the smart chord that has the mute button. I truly like it much better. Just my
Plus my best friend is a Boston Cop so its ALL good. |

Lots of votes for the V1, but I've also read the 9500xi is supposed to be good, I think it incorporates the iphone-like updates in terms of the speed traps/etc, which might be handy. |
