confession - sub date 16610
Hi guys,
My first post and it will be a bit strange...sorry I was "observing" various treads for many days here with the intention to pull trigger and buy my first Rolex. Many of you had been my mentors without knowing about it. Thanks a lot. After some time I have strongly decided to go with ss sub date like timeless classics which really catch my eye. Unfortunately I have found out from you (dark side of your expertise lol) that 16610 will be soon replaced by new 116610 with brand new features but I was still tending to 16610 look. I was trying to find 16610 version to see it in real but I wasn't successful nor in Luxemburg neither in Brussels (June 2010). Rolex would have been gift for my 30th birthday but all ADs across whole Benelux had been telling me that it s too late, all 16610 are sold out and I have to wait for 116610 if I want sub date. Somehow I persuaded myself that new sub date is better because it s brand new and all of these feature there.... suddenly a day of my 30th birthday one AD from Brussels called me whether I am still looking for 16610 because he has got one. I rushed to the retailer store to see it in person and I was stunned. I have asked AD whether I can compared it to new 116610 model, which, of course, wasn't possible but he had 116618LN and 116619 LB to make some comparisons. First thing that wasn't even mention here is the weight. I don't know exact figures but I can estimate that new sub date are some 1/3 heavier than still contemporary version. Moreover they are more sporty (supercase, beefier lugs and hands) and maybe I wasn't paying enough attention but even cerachrom bezel wasn't such an alluring issue. I am not diver at all. I am working as a diplomat, wearing a suits all days and some casual decent dress during weekends. My wrist is 7 inches (quite girly but true )....so to wrap it up somehow I have bought one of the last available 16610. I love the watch very much but "bug in my head" is back. Did I do right when I have taken 16610 over 116610? I only want to hear your opinions, because you and only YOU can understand me. |

Congrats on your 1st Rolex. By joining this forum, I'm sure it won't be your last either.
The Sub is an icon, a classic. Congrats on your acquisition. Can't wait to see pics. |

You made the right choice.........If when the new one comes out and you like it,trade up!!
One thing to mention though is the weight comment....The 2 models you were refering to were solid gold models!! These will certainly be heavier than the SS.... As for the 16610 and the new 116610 I would say the weight will be very close, within 15gr or so...

yes! The 16610 is an icon, and always will be. There'll be plenty of time to buy a 116610 if that's what you want to do in the future.
PS Us 16610 owners know it's MUCH more beautiful anyway |

Get the 16610, the new ones have not retained the classic look of the Submariner IMO.

Ultimately the watch that makes YOU happy is the right decision. Plus, you can always change your mind later and buy the ceramic, either as a replacement, or to start a collection. Congratulations!

I just bought one as well. I wanted the classic before they were gone. I dont care too much about the new features, the classic sub is a really flexible watch and looks great without screaming look at me... no one really ever notices it and after about a month it disapears from your wrist, you cant feel it, its perfectly balanced.

Absolutely the right choice. The 16610 is a classic, but I'm not so sure the new one will ever be a classic. IMHO it is an ugly watch. I agree with Parasentesis that Rolex dropped the ball on the new Sub.

You did just fine. The name is the same, but the new Sub has some different features. Basically it's a different watch all together.
zenjoy your new watch, but know that the new model will be there for years to come. You can get one if you ever wanted one. |

Congratulations!
FWIW I've never regretted a Rolex purchase. Wear it, enjoy it, and then trade it when you feel like you want something else. They keep their values very well.

Gentlemen,
thank you very much for warm welcome to TRF and of course for your opinions that made me extremely happy. As a laic in this area and I was very curious to hear some expert's statements to my issue. I was expecting some discussion and polemic but I have got unanimity nod for my purchase. I will have definitely pleasure to wear my 16610. Pics will follow as soon as I charge camera lithium battery which I have found out to be dry |

Absolutely! Good choise. I'm sure the new one will be nice but...........there are definately things I still like better about the older model. The 16610 case is nicer in my opinion. The new lugs take some getting used to. Also the weight is heavier on the new one. Ceramic bezel is nice and all, but wait till you put a chip in it. Unlike the bezel on your 16610, the ceramic bezel would cost an arm and a leg to replace. Don't think ceramic doesn't chip, believe me, it does!

TRF as well and Rolex as my first acquisition was a 16610 last month. Congrats!! |
