1680 help needed :)
When i hold it close to my ear i hear a ticking sound, like a audible ticking, quick ticking, should i be worried and have it opened?
it has service papers etc but maybe something is up... bought it from a great guy though. is it normal for the oldie movements to be audible when no music or anything is playing you can hear distinct semi-loud ticking. When i hold it away from me i can barely hear it even in silence and when outside or at work no noise at all (unlike the OQ i had) anyone with a 1680 care to enlighten me? also is that polywatch stuff ok to use on the crystal? will it harm the watch at all? is there any canadian source i can get it from? thanks guys! aadil still cant find camera, so i'll have to take pics of this guy some other time :P |

My 1675 has always ticked since I got it a few years ago. Do newer watches make no noise?

I have a spanking new Sub, and it ticks. It is the 8Hz sound made by the movement that I assumed was inevitable. It takes a little listening to but once you find it, it's easy. It certainly isn't audible from as little as an inch away, but ear-to-watch it ticks. I just took the (admittedly peculiar) opportunity to check the sound with a stethoscope, and it is there; 8Hz with a nice set of upper harmonics. How can it not tick?

PS I must emphasise that before I listened to my watch with a stethoscope, I closed my door.

Is the movement for the 1680 a 1575 like it is for my 1675 that is 35 years old?

I can hear my 1680 tick when I hold it to my ear. It is noticably different from my GMT II.

Its quite normal its because in relative terms its a slow beat movement more of a tick--tock,rather than a tic tic tic.Polywatch is fine to use on all acrylic crystals, you can get it from Eddie Platts at timefactors http://www.timefactors.com/stuff.htm

I can certainly hear the difference in the rate of the 1575 slow beat in the 1680 as compared to the fast beat 3135, but I wouldn't call it loud. The "ping" of the fast beat movement is noticeable.
I have to hold both next to my ear in a quiet room. Polywatch is great! Some have used brasso or toothpaste also. (with your finger). |

Does a past (and to some extent present) life as a musician mitigate the sentence? It does have harmonics...really it does...

All mine tick. I love the sound difference between my higher beat Tudor and Sub versus my low beat Seiko 6309. Very distinctive.
A silent watch would be boring or broken. :)
