The "Interesting Fact (or Myth)" thread.

Time for another "Interesting Fact" thread I reckon.

You are heavier after your watch is fully wound.

The potential energy stored in the mainspring actually weighs something.

It's an almost infinitesimally small weight .... and someone else would have to wind it for you because if you did it you'd be losing weight performing the action and defeating the object.

Then again the oil/water the person deposits on the crown whilst winding it would be hugely more heavy than the stored energy and whilst they're doing it you'd be breathing and metabolising which completely counteracts the effect.

In fact it's a completely stupid example but this is a watch forum after all.

Perhaps you've got a more interesting fact, can't be difficult.

.... or if you want to bust a myth, go for it.

Wouldn't the water/oil the person deposits onto the crown have only been transferred from their index finger and thumb, thereby not changing the weight?

That is in the case of another person winding the watch, so that the wearer doesn't burn fat by winding the watch.

Hmm there was something about chronographs that someone could possibly put better...

That the act of running a chronograph does not consume energy in the mainspring any faster than not running it, however the watch will run out of energy faster with the chronograph engaged, yet if the chronograph is stopped the moment before it stops, it will continue to run for several hours afterwards.

So on an automatic, running the chronograph or not will not make the watch wind-down any more rapidly or cause the automatic winding system any additional stress, even though it appears that more things are moving and more work is being done as the mainspring can still only unwind as fast as is governed by the escapement.

At least I found that interesting the first time I heard it after being told running the chrono will make my watch run down faster

Always wondered if the additional resistance generated by the chrono part of the movement would have any significant effect on the timing, I'd have thought it would but mine times the same exactly whether its on or off, maybe someone with more knowledge of such things could explain that.

"Dirt eating is not something people do on purpose or on accident normally. There are no statistics recorded by the CDC." from the cdc web page.

But then again, the cdc people do not not work at a construction site.

Purpose or accident, it is unavoidable and easily proven.

Most US pennies (1 cent) are "two headed"... a head on both sides.

Most people don't eat and drink 10 pounds a day.

So if everyone stopped eating dirt, there would be no need for Weight Watchers?

I did not say that most people eat and drink 10 pounds a day. Please re-read my interesting fact and give it some thought. If you still want to call let's wager watches.

This eating over 10 pounds of dirt per day sounds like something the character "Harry" from "Cheers" might bet on. Are you saying it is not ingested, but we are merely sitting or standing over at least 10 pounds of dirt when we eat?

Next time you are eating look down. Now, consider what you are eating over... carpet; perhaps. Cement; likely. Dirt; almost certainly down there somewhere. Therefore you are eating over at least 10 pounds of dirt.

Close, but your position is of no consequence. I was saying that you are eating over at least 10 pounds of dirt.

Leave it to the Master to come up with a bar ruse fact. Next he'll get y'all liquored up and announce he can predict the Super Bowl score before the game even starts.
