Rolex daytona vs omega speedmaster

Can someone please explain to me the difference between the speedmaster and the daytona besides the obvious that its a rolex?

And apart from the fact that they have completely different looks, case design, construction, bracelet, movement, history, etc...??

My suggestion would be to just search on this forum or Google for each model to get a full list of specs and pictures to compare the differences

I'll put it this way, the only thing they do have in common is that both watches have a chrono feature.

Biggest difference is that the choices of Daytona are different metal type and dials.
For the Speedmaster, you have several different types of movements, some with date, full calendar, split-seconds, etc.

I'll take one of each. I already have the Speedmaster (loving it!!!), working on a DSSD and Daytona next ... in the very long-term future. Isn't the Daytona movement now made in-house over the previous Zenith movement. Can't go wrong with a Zenith movement.

It is indeed. Rolex Cal. 4130. To say its an amazing movement is an understatement.

The Speedy Pro is a manual wind with a longer history and much lower price. The Daytona is an auto winder at a completely different price range. IMO, the Daytona is much dressier and less robust looking (just appearance) than the Omega.

Thanks m5, its my one and only watch (I'm actually selling my Speedy) and I wear it daily. Theres also the Speedy Panda, Model Ref. 323.30.40.40.04.001. It reminds me a lot of the older Daytonas with the black plastic tach bezel.

The Speedmaster Professional used to come with a Hesalite crystal (I think it's now sapphire) and until a few years ago, you could buy one with a display caseback. I believe the movement was - and still is - a manual winding Lemania. There are many variations available in gold, gold/steel, with moonphases etc. There are also Speedmaster Automatics.

I believe early Daytonas used Valjoux movements, followed by Zenith and then Rolex's own inhouse caliber from 2000 onwards. There is no display caseback model.

the Hesalite crystal and sapphire crystal displayback has been discountuined (3573 from memory...)

I have had Daytona's and Speedmasters. My daily work watch is a SMP with the date wheel and 12. My current Daytona is a TT Zenith model and is used mostly as a dress watch. FYI my other daily watch is a Sea Dweller. I gave each of my sons a Speedmaster out of my collection for Christmas. One was the Racing model and the other a SMP Moon watch. The Racing model has a different case and movement(auto).
Neither has a date. The SMP with a date wheel can be had for about 3.5K while Daytona's start at about 6K and go up rather fast from there!

the bad thing about original speedmaster is its only 60m water resist. very sensitive to water.

the speedmater date is 100m though. all daytona is 100m

I used to have a speedy pro and loved it, and I hate chrono's. The thing that made me flip it was that I could not wear it in the pool, and I hate taking off a watch to swim. The speedy's are fantastic because you can swap out the bracelet for a strap, and they look amazing on whatever strap you put them on, it's way more versatile than the Daytona.

Daytona has the screw down chrono buttons. You need to unscrew the chrono buttons in order to use it. Speedmaster does not have that.

The Daytona chrono buttons have a more distinctive click/feel when operate. Speedmaster's click/feel is more subtle.

The Daytona minute counter hand moves at one minute interval. The Speedmaster minute counter hand moves continuously.

Daytona has screw down crown. Speedmaster doesn't have screw down crown.

I have the Speedmaster Reduced with the acrylic crystal and Daytona SS Black.

Daytona is a very classy watch for sure. The Speedy is also a great watch but I wouldn't wear one with a suit (personal opinion) I don't know that one is better than the other really. I like them both but would take a Daytona over a Speedy any day.

The Speedy is suppose to take you to the Moon not in the pool.

X2 - Hesalite was the same crystal material used in space, wasn't it?

George Clooney wore a Speedy on a black leather strap in a recent movie called The American. There were a lot of very close up shots of the watch and it looked really nice. I own a Zenith Daytona and REALLY wish there was a strap option with endpieces to put on it at times. In some ways it pisses me off that Rolex seems to go out of its way to limit your options with their watches. Would a series of cool, sporty stainless steel watches on leather straps really be that bad?

Watched that movie and has to freeze the frame to check out the watch on good old George. Very slow movie ....
