Deepest DeepSea?
All the Rolex subs I've had have accompanied me on the commercial dives I've undertaken in my career messing around on & in the water. The DeepSea I bought soon after its release has been no exception. However, its depth rating warranted a dive way beyond my (or any other human's) diving depth limit. So, true to the watches heritage (aka DeepSea Special), I decided to strap it to a submersible heading for deepwater. As a young lad I was captivated by seeing a rolex sub in a jewellers shop window underwater in a wee tank, within a clam shell that was opening & closing with a stream of bubbles for effect. I guess I still have this fascination! I saw online that someone dived a regular Sea-Dweller to 1200m (http://www.home.no/rolextest/) - but couldnt find a similar excercise with a DeepSea. So here it is:
ROV crew use tie-wraps to secure the DeepSea to the sub. They were keen to see an expensive watch implode at depth I think. IMG_1812.jpg IMG_1813.jpg The sub reaches a wreck at 1473m (which is about 4833 ft). Just after this snap was taken the sub descended a little further to reach 1490m (4888ft). Rolex01_blanked.jpg After a 3hour dive at near freezing temperatures, on working sub the watch returned to the surface still ticking. As I expected of course but to the disappointment of many onboard.... IMG_1825.jpg So now the bar is set - has anyone else dived a DeepSea Deeper? |

Yeaahhh! That's very cool. Great work Sir, and awesome photos. Have you got any more pics, let's see some more :-)
I too saw the same "Rolex in the water with the bubbles in the shop window" when I was a kid, and it definitely made me want to own a Rolex, a dream which took over 30 years to fulfill. |

Well...my pool is 10 feet in the deep end and I once spilled a Tanqueray and Tonic on my Sub. Where does that put me? Besides Alcoholics Anonymous!

I know Rolex test the DSSD in a device developed in association with Comex, and that the depth tested equates to 16000ft- some 25% greater than that written on the dial. I'm interested to know though about actual dives in seawater - in the true spirit of the original DeepSea. I have some more deepwater work planned - so maybe I'll dive my own watch again to beat the 4888ft it's done already :)
