Icon8 Scary experience at local jewery store

I pass this local small jewery/pawn store every day, and there is this huge sign : "buy gold, buy watch". One day I get really curious about the market price of my watch, and walked in, with my 2008 Pt DD with diamond on my wrist (it is my daily wear now, even when I am in my T and shorts, cannot live more than 100 feed from my DD). I want the store owner to appraise my watch. He took it, use his eye lope look at the back side of the cover very carefully. And asked me (with a thick Russian accent):

"is this a replica?"

I am obviously upset, and asked him instead:" do you know about watches? Can you feel the weight of this thing? it is Platinum"

He said:"just the weight? How come there is no stamp?"

I got scared, and afraid he will run with my watch, I took it from his hand, and run away as fast as I can.

I am stupid. Curiocity kills the cat.

Yep, not sure I would want to take any of my watches to just any jeweler.

Yes, stay away from those places. Just bad news all the way around and the fact he asked you if it was a fake. Real crazy!

So the reputable guy has the sign "buy gold, buy watch" on his storefront window? I think not. IF you want melt value w/o the assay and appraisal hassle, buy 18-24K gold coins.

The other day I was shopping and a gentleman asked me "Nice watch.... is it real?" and before I could utter a response, his galfriend/wife whatever nudged him and said in a womanly firm voice: "Does it LOOK fake?" - He turned red and said "Nice watch, man", she waved, nodded and they walked off.

What a maroon! I would have run too! He was trying to pull a fast one on you, hoping you wouldn't know anything about your watch, so he could buy it from you for next to nothing! I would have spit out the model number, series, and movement, and then looked at his dumbfounded face.

If you want an appraisal, go to an AD. You'll probably have to pay if you want it in writing.

Pawn shop value and market value are going to be hugely different.

You went into a store with the sign "buy gold/buy watch" written like that and you're surprised about the experience!? Stay far away from those places!

If you let him take the watch in back to "authenticate it" you WOULD have ended up with a replica Rolex.. LOL.

I have a We buy Gold/Silver/Watches sign on my sidewalk, and I buy and sell rare coins and Rolex. I am a rare coin and Currency dealer, and I own Glasgow Coin & Jewelry. I pay strong prices and do I great business. Don't knock peoples businesses based on such trivial pieces of info.

Eddie, I think you make a valid point. Most people are associating those signs with pawn shops and shady jewelry stores because everyone of them has a "we buy gold and Rolex" signs in their window.

Bring in a fake and see what he offers you!

I bought a 1999 GMT Master Pepsi Bezel, market worth = $3700-4000.

I was offered $2900 for it by a guy who will turn around and sell it for $5000!

It made me pretty upset that I asked him what the trade in value was worth as I was looking to upgrade.

He was probably going to offer you $500 hoping you found it somewhere and knew nothing about watches. Then when you left you'd be the joke of the month and he had a watch worth 10's of thousands. Good thing you left, obviously.

OK, I'll play Devil's advocate. Why did you run? Are you afraid of Russian accents? Did you feel afraid at any moment? Why did you judge the man based on his accent and his sign?

Good thing you got out of there...

I hate the idea of handing my watches over to any pawn shop.
Better ways to get an appraisal.

Russian accents don't mean anything. Well.. No more than a sign that says "we buy gold" in Detroit :)

Please post a pic of your Pt Dd-one of my faves.

Last place to go if you want to know what anything is worth. This place is a pawn shop or at least sounds like one? These guys will buy for melt value or buy as low as they can to sell as high as they can. Try here on the fourm if you need advice next time.
