New Rolex or a tank of gas???
A few of us went fishing last weekend and basically spent the price of a nice used Rolex on gas. Gas in South Jersey was $4.21 a gallon when we filled up on Friday. We only went for 3 days but burned about 1350 gallons. Just crazy, $5700 for gas. I don't even want to do the math and figure out how much the fish in my freezer cost us per pound. I have a 33' boat that holds 400 gallons and due to super high gas prices I have only taken it out 4 or 5 times all summer. A lot of the guys I fish with have started going with each other so we can split the gas. I just thought I would complain a little. Oh well guess the sayings true that "you have to pay to play....."

Tell me about it. I drive a Land Rover and work 60 miles round trip. Tank consumes 14 miles per gallon and like you, I don't even want to do the math anymore! Just bang my head on the wall! Estimated for a used Rolex every 2-3 months maybe?

Glad you had a great time though Gunter, I think that if you lived in the UK you might think about selling your boat, over £6 ($9.77) a gallon, that was in March, I'm not sure how much it has gone up/down since then, not a lot down I'll wager.

I find myself doing alot more inshore striper/fluke fishing nowadays. A trip out to the Dip, Texas tower or Canyon trolling for tuna is a real expensive day. Sharks can be caught 20 miles off the beach but for tuna its a long run to clear Gulf stream water. Its not even worth it with the stupid bag limits they enforce now. 1 BFT are they kidding!!!
Dragging eels 1/2 mile from the marina and bringing home a couple of 25-30 lb stripers just about everytime has been keeping cash in my wallet recently. |

As Dave said; at current UK pump prices that would've cost you about $13,200 I reckon!

Wow guys that's crazy high for gas in the UK. I knew it was more expensive but $9+ a gallon, WOW. All I have done this year is inshore fishing with my boat. If I'm just trolling around I can go fishing all day for just $300 or so. I have 3 outboards and usually only run them at very low rpm's when cruising and when trolling I just run 1. We did have good luck last weekend with a few mako's, some mahi, a lot of YF tuna's and 2 swords in the 150 pound range. If gas gets much higher my boat won't be worth crap and I won't be able to go fishing very often at all. Oh well. Life is still grand!!!

Thats pretty sweet. I get 32-33 MPG on the HWY in the Corvette (with 660ish RWHP.) Its probably a few MPG less than that because I've changed the injectors and the computer doesn't compensate but I still can get 550 miles out of a tank on a road trip. All the other vehicles we have are major gas hogs. The SL550 is terrible on gas 13/21 on the sticker and closer to about 10/16 and my 09 Silverado gets about 15 everywhere. I'm not even going to mention the RV.

Problem solved:
Don't whine about 14 mpg, I get 9-10 in mixed driving.

1. When creeping along in traffic (as we all our more and more these days) my gas engine is off and I am running on battery, getting the best milage and really digging it instead of being all frustrated and stressed because I'm wasting gas. 2. I get better milage in the city (because I run on battery at slow speeds) but even highway I get about 32-33, it's pretty cool getting that kind of milage in an SUV. 3. I'll never save the world, but it makes me feel good that I'm doing my little part to help with America's dependence on foreign oil, global warming, pollution etc. Hybrids of course are not for everybody, but I encourage people to at least check them out, mine is almost 5 years old and going strong but first gen, the latest ones are down in price and up in performance. |

Thanks Paul!
Oops, I paid $20,500, actually. I asked as my sister is looking at the Focus and the Cruz, but she does almost all highway, both can get 40 mpg. 1. I rarely sit in traffic, I work so early in the day there is little traffic issues either way. 2. Drive 10 miles each, freeway, highway, and city. 3. I don't worry about saving the world, but my running costs, gas, insurance, and oil changes, have saved me $1300 in the first 6 months of owning over my 7000 pound pick-up I sold. |
