Richard Mille
Anyone here got one or thinking about getting one?
I'm coming round to the idea that he is the watchmaker of our time, and perhaps I should consider an "entry level" one, like a used RM010 in titanium. I went to Richard Mille Hong Kong for the first time today to try one on - I was surprised how light it was. I guess I am too used to the weight of my Rolex GMTC TT. I like the fact that he is making watches of enormous quality and innovation coupled with contemporary style and ideas. |

Watchmaker of our time? No. He does design some nice watches though. You should do some research on the brand. While he does design the watches, they're actually made by AP. He isn't an independent watchmaker.
That being said, Richard Mille certainly does design watches of extremely high quality. The watchmaker of our time could be one of the following: Paul Gerber Ludwig Oeschlin Laurent Ferrier Philippe Dufour Peter Speake Marin Or MANY MANY more. |

RM10 is a beast. There is no other big watch that wears like it.
You can probably tell I already took the plunge but having looked carefully at both the 10 and 11, I'll opine that a) the RM11 is more cluttered and consequently loses alot in terms of the skeleton effect; and b) the additional size of the RM11 is somehow just the difference between fitting under 20% of my shirt cuffs and 80% of them. If I was ready to move on an RM11, I'd also consider a RM04 used. I've seen them round about $100k and their presence is just incredible. HI was just playing around with some macro tubes, so here's mine: |

No kidding.
They let me test drive one in Vegas. Not sure what model it was, but it cost was $650,000. To be honest it didn't even smile at me, but the thought of test driving one that cost so much was just to irresitable. I am glad however I didn't fall in luv with it.

Besides thats what they charge for them. I would imagine it is because of the few that they probably produce and the complications that are included on some of them.
They must be able to sell them at that cost they are charging.

I agree they are unique, I'm not a big fan as there is too much going on for me, I lean more toward the clean and simple dials but to each his own.

Can you link any reference to this? I know Richard Mille once worked for AP but I've never heard of his watches being made by AP. He has his own factory where he claims everything is manufacturered

RM are increadable machines but if i was laying down that kind of cash i would go for something space aged and rarer, like an Urwerk or a MB&F.
those sing to me more. i want to know what im getting for my money and a 3 hand watch, granted in a loverly light weight carbon alloyed body just doesnt seem like its worth it, horologically speaking.

Richard Mille is a member of the Audemars Piguet board and if i'm not mistaken AP owns about 10% of RM.

Thomas, you are correct on the 10% ownership of RM by AP.
Additionally, APRP (Audemars-Piguet Renaud-Papi) develop all movements and build watches for other brands including Richard Mille, Harry Winston, Chanel and Franck Muller.

Two of those watches posted, I had the pleasure of actually trying them on at SWB here in Perth. Marvelous pieces from MB&F however, not my type. |

Him and his team do the final finishing on the cases/assemble the watches, but the movement and casemaking etc is outsourced. Sure AP makes great movements, but when you pay the kind of money you pay for RM you expect the independent treatment (completely in-house, all done by hand, and all the other things that come with the eccentricity of the independent watchmakers). Can I justify that sort of money for an RM? If I had unlimited funds, then yes I would own a RM. But when it comes down to it, in that price-range there are MANY other choices that represent much more value for the money, and are truly a part of independent horology. I realize this looks quite cynical of Richard Mille, so let me rectify that. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Mille and his designs, and I would love to own one one day. Richard Mille is an extraordinary man, and an amazing designer. |

I wonder how much AP charge Mille for a RM11 :)
All in all RM is not that interesting as Uhrwerk or MB&F in regards to movement design. Very interesting stuff to learn about the ownership and the supplier chain of RM. you guys are pro
