Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Panda

The first time I picked up the Audemars Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph (AP ROOC) the first thing that came to mind was the weight. It felt like the weight of gold and some can even mistaken it for white gold because it was just so heavy all the way around. Unlike other big watches such as Rolex DeepSea Sea Dweller (DSSD), Omega Ploprof 1200m and many models from Panerai where these watches are mostly top heavy, the AP ROOC feels balance all the way through from the bracelet all the way to the case of the watch. Kudos to Emmanuel Gueit for designing this watch and can you believe that he designed it in the mid-80s? He was so ahead of his time. Good thing he never gave up and chased down AP's CEO and board members until they finally gave this design a chance.

Lots of hexi shape on the ROOC as the primary design as this is AP's signature. There have been some subtle changes such as the usage of Arabic numeral compared to the earlier models which had the stick markers. I'm excited to see the stick markers back in the newest offering and I think the squared off chrono pushes in the new model pushes the AP ROOC in the right direction from a design standpoint. The newer offering is definitely more futuristic in its designed and the hexi shape now is finally consistent throughout the watch where it seems the designer got tired of hexi shaped with the original model and chosen a more traditional shape for the pushers that is in the Panda.

More review and pics to come.....

The design of the bezel is definitely different than any watch out there. Where as other makers tend to integrate the bezel to the housing, AP chosen to stack it on top which makes it very dimensional. What is more interesting is that since the bezel has a flat surface and so does the side of the housing when looking at that watch flat on, it makes the watch looks like it is integrated and flatten out the look of the watch (see third pic above). This is why in certain angle the watch does not look as thick but it really is almost as high as an Omega PloProf 1200m (I will take pictures to compare the AP to other models later in the review).

The over visual effect of the AP ROOC is definitely interesting to say the least. AP attentions to details flows to the dial which in my opinion is one of the best out there. The Panda dial really stands out not only with with usage of contrasting colors but also the slanted position of the rehault. The signature tapestry dial background makes it even more visually appealing. I used to think the Panerai sandwich dial was cool but AP's craftsman on their dial takes it to a whole different level.

So how does the AP ROOC stands against other great watches such as Rolex Daytona? This will be discuss in my next segment of my review but before posting I do want to say that the AP ROOC is like a watch that has gone through P90X and have lean muscle to show for where as the Rolex Daytona may have not been to the gym lately. To be continue with comparison pics and other thoughts.....

Great info and watch of course!

I fully expect AP to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Emmanuel Gueit's ROO design with some cool models next year.

The Panda is one of my favorites, if it had working lume it would be in my collection.

Please do! I was torn between this model on the ROC Panda that I ended up getting. It was the draw to the more classic case design that got me with the ROC.
