Wanted to ask the member their views on the AP offshore Royal Oak series.

To me they are not the most attractive tool watches and bloody expensive. Do they have special movements etc which warrant this price?

I wouldn't refer to any AP as a tool watch, so let us say the ROO series are Sports watches.

Regarding bang for your buck, AP put massive effort into the details - the external finish combinations are simply breathtaking, same for the internal finishing.

Everything oozes quality - dials, bracelets, horn-back straps with deviating stitching, colour schemes, case materials ....... I could go on.

Go spend a few minutes with one and see what you think

It's all a matter of taste Jeff.

Many refer to the top 3 as:

Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. Can take that or leave it.

I don't necessarily go by others opinions but I am certainly a fan of AP as I am a huge fan of Rolex...(I have mostly Rolex in my collection) - I don't have PP or VC.

I have the AP ROO Safari...this has the in house caliber 3126/3840 - 55 hour reserve + 59 jewels..

To my understanding AP only make around 30,000 watches per year.

They have an extraordinary finish - the attention to detail is incredible! I am not a fan of all their models in this range (actually I am of most!) but I certainly was blown away by the Safari....

Here are my pics of my recent acquisition....and Jeff....I don't think I'm missing anything!! - at the end of the day if you find them unattractive that's your preference....I certainly do not

Neither would i call the Offshore as a Tool watch just as a sportier line from Audemars Piguet.
AP is putting a lot of their work in the finishing both in the movement , case and the dials.
I wasn't all in love by AP until i tried one on and now i keep wanting more of them.
These are the different movements AP uses for the Offshore series.

Caliber 2326 is the JLC-based movement found in the Rubber Clad and older Offshores.

The 3126 is the AP-based (3120 base) movement which is found in a number of Offshore models, including all current Safari, Navy, Volcano and the Grand Prix.

The chronograph module is a Dubois-Depraz, found in both the 2326 and the 3126, which sits at the top of the base movement.

I've never loved the look of the RO / ROO as I'm not partial to the angles (i.e. octaganol bezel, hexoganol screws, etc), but I realize this is purely personal preference.

However I have tried a few on and they feel great. Finish is excellent, and the bracelet is a work of art.

I prefer the RO to ROO in most cases, the ROO are too big for my taste and some models looks completly insane. The Safari shown above is great looking though.

I'd say 15-20% discount on the Jumbo tops as it is a very popular model.
Also have a look at the 15300

I'm not an AP expert like Thomas or some of the other guys here, but the 15202 is based on the original RO. The movement is different, I believe it's better, no seconds hand, and I'm sure some other differences too. Oh, and retails about $18k.

The Jumbo with reference 15202 is the newer reference of the original Royal Oak 5402ST which was produced in 1972.
The Caliber 2121 is very thin (3.05mm) and are used as a base movement in several other more complicated AP's.
The rotor can be ordered with a personalized rotor which i've seen and it's pretty neat to have your initials on it.
The other more visible difference between the 15202 is that both the case and bracelet are much thinner then the 15300 and also doesn't have a screw in crown.
It also don't have a second hand an a non quick-set date.

The most AD's have a waiting list for the Jumbo and the price for it is 18,800€ compared to the 15300 which is 13,000€

It's because of making the case stronger. Then there is actually a anti magnetic cage behind the back case.

I'm pretty sure a 15300 would fit perfect under your cuffs.
I would recommend you to try them both before you pull the trigger.

The AP ROO is a millionaire's tool watch. It's not my favorite esthetically, however i do recognize that it is an EXTREMELY high-end, mass produced watch, in fact one of the best and I would be honored to own one. Even though if given my druthers I would make a different selection with that money LOL
