The Rebirth of Nikon

Nikon has finally announced their first full-frame DSLR...the D3 at $5,000 USD. I must say that I'm quite excited since I was seriously considering switching over to the Canon 5D. I'm glad that I didn't since I only have to sell 1 Nikkor DX lens instead of all of them now.

So I wonder how many Rolex purchases will be put off by this announcement?

For all your great photographers out there. If you have $3000 to spend on a new camera and accessories for a experienced novice (if there is such a thing) what would you recommend?

I currently have the D70 witht the firmware upgrade for it to be up to par with the D70s regarding functionality sans the 2" LCd screen.

I can live with the 1.5 mag for now and the D70 has bee performing flawlessly.

I'm glad to hear though that Nikon has come to its senses using a full frame sensor at a great price.

It will depend on what you already have and if you're committed to a system. Accessories alone, like a good tripod can cost you up to $1000.

I would recommend budgeting about $2000 on good glass and about $1000 or less on the camera body.

If you need more specific advice, let me know what you already have or don't have.

VH,

Thanks for the reply. I've got nothing! I used to take a ton of photos about a decade ago but that was with a manual Pentax SLR in 35mm. I've just been using point and shoots since then.

I'd add a prime lens to that like a Sigma 30/1.4 or Nikkor 50/1.4.

Several local cam shops...we'll see which one gets stock first. If I can get 9fps, FF and an additional stop of clean shots over my D2X I'll be thrilled.

If you're interested in the Nikon route, this is what I would recommend for about $3k.

D80 = $875
18-70mm = $350
70-200mm f/2.8 VR = $1615
50mm f/1.8 = $115
Total = $2955

or

D80 = $875
Tokina 12-24mm f/4 = $500
18-200mm VR= $750
50mm f/1.8 = $115
60mm f/2.8 macro = $400
Total = $2640

The extra money can be spent on a circular polarizer or a UV filter and an external flash.

The SB-600 flash goes for $184 if you want an external flash, I rarely use one.

I you don't need to buy now, I would recommend rebate time where you can save hundreds.

Canons are good, but you have to admit that it's exciting news on what Nikon will be rolling out.

Yep, cannot disagree at all.. If it was not for giants like Canon and Nikon jumping into the digital SLR arena, the technology would not be anywhere near where it is now...

I'm generally a Canon guy...but I have two Nikons..

I believe the $1800 D300 will also be full frame. I've also heard whispers about the D90.

I'm still shooting with my father's old Pentax Spotmatic II.

The last "big" rebate was Oct 06 - Jan 07, so the next big one should be coming up in a few months right in time for Christmas.

I read up on the 18-200mm VR lens. It sounds like a winner. I might be able to get by with just that lens for now. Do you know how good the macros are with that lens. Good enough for watch shots?

Took this with the 18-55 kit lens don't think the 18-200 will disappoint plenty of pixels for cropping options still good sudo macros available by all accounts though maybe not 1:1 but good enough for watch shots IMHO

Steve,

The first thing that jumped into my mind on seeing your photo was "Grail Watch!"

The lens is not a macro lens or has macro capabilities unless you purchase a close-up filter and even than, 1:1 or 1:2 ratio is not perfect.

If you are referring to just taking photos of a watch, I'm sure that you can do fine.

Would a used D200 with 18-200 vr lens both in good overall condition (1 year old with 6700 shutter activations) be a good deal at $1,500?
