New member, old watch, (probably) repeat questions.
My apologies in advance for any repeat/common questions.
I have a Rolex that was purchased around 1951 (give or take...would need to check the receipts for exact date – yep, they were passed down with the watch and box). I had it valued around 5 years ago, and promptly gave it to my mother to look after as I was young, irresponsible and had no insurance. Anyhoo, I have it back – but will be giving it back to mum as she lives in Melbourne – which has the only (from what I’ve seen) certified Rolex service centre in Australasia to get it serviced etc - and am now wondering about certificates. When did they start being provided and are they necessary for insurance purposes etc? I’d also be very interested in working out what the original strap looked like, as it has been replaced at some point and I would like to get the watch back to its original condition. Thanks for any and all help |

Welcome to TRF!
Certificates have been issued from the very start, so your watch would (have had) one, too. About the "strap" (or do you mean: bracelet?): Cannot possible tell without a pic Here is MY suggestion how to post pics here: 1) Go to www.photobucket.com and create an account (it's FREE!) 2) Upload the pic to photobucket from your PC 3) When it's uploaded, copy the IMG code (BOTTOM bar under the photo in photobucket - there are four bars, but you'd wanna use the LAST bar - see my arrow on the Print Screen underneath). You copy the IMG code by simply clicking on the bar: 4) You then note that photobucket tells you "copied". 5) Then go to rolexforums and start your post. 6) In your post, press the "Add picture" button and a prompt pops up with http://. Delete that http:// and press CTRL + V (now that address of the photo - the "IMG tag" - is inserted in the prompt you got. 7) Then DELETE the last and first [IMG] to get rid of "IMG" standing before and after your photo when you post it. (not important, but just looks better). Or you can skip # 6 & 7 and just rightclick in your post and choose "paste"...........BINGO your photo will be there as soon as you press Submit reply. IMPORTANT: DO NOT DELETE THE PICTURE FROM PHOTOBUCKET (OR ANY SERVER YOU USE) SINCE DELETING IT THERE WOULD ALSO DELETE IT HERE ON TRF! (RED CROSS INSTEAD OF PIC). That's it!

Hi there, welcome aboard!
If they'll still work on a watch that old, the RSC will provide a 1 year warranty certificate. J.J. from NZ will probably be along in a while to assist.

Lokib,
Welcome to TRF. You have a great watch, but we would need more to help you. The band could be either leather, or a Jubilee bracelet (introduced in 1945) or the early Oyster bracelet (introduced in 1947). Finding either of this vintage may be difficult...I would opt for leather. Rolex started putting serial numbers on their Oyster case in 1927, so we could date it for you if you provided us with that..... I'll bet you have a nice Oyster Perpetual that was the father of the Explorer and Air-King (maybe I'm just wishing). Basically the same watch, but they only started printing those names on the dials in the mid/late 1950's. If it's a date model, there will not be a cyclops (introduced in 1954)... Hope you'll be able to get it serviced and back on a wrist where it belongs.. |

Space,
Paleez. Go to Photobucket and check out the bars. Mine shows four bars now, and since you take the time to help new members post, perhaps you'll find some changes in their format. Be great to see a pic of the above! Cheers, Mrdi |

You STILL need to click the IMG code bar (see my "handpainted" arrow): So if you follow my steps above, you should be able to post a pic!

Just this:
"you'd wanna use the third and last bar). " Perhaps it means the third or last bar? Guess you could read it either way Thanks |

Thanks to everyone for the replies - will work on getting a pic soon.
Anyhoo, the watch is indeed an Oyster Perpetual, model 6084, serial number is 736411. Any help with the date of manufacture would be greatly appreciated. I must admit, I am having a few concerns about it's authenticity....mainly because the pics of Oyster Perpetuals I've seen don't have numbers (12,3,6,9) on the face. But one would hope that the valuer I used would be able to spot a fake! Pardon my ignorance, but what is meant by a "cyclops"? |

Lokib,
That serial number would be a late 1950 era watch... The Cyclops is the big glob of glass stuck on the face to magnify the date.. |
