Worst nightmare
I have read some threads on broken crystals. My Rolex was only days old. I came in from doing some woodworking in my garage, I was hot sweaty and full of sawdust. I took my Rollie off to wash my arms and hands....then placed it on the counter....on a dish towel. I washed my arms and hands......grabed for a towel ....and in slow motion I saw my Rolex (like in a movie) flip once and land.....SMACK....face down.....The crystal was smashed.

Man that's a lot for a crystal replacement! I guess they must've adjusted the movement too?
Oh I dropped a couple of Speedys. They both landed on the side of the case. Didn't even phase 'em ![]() |

Sorry, Wayno, fortunately I never had that happen to me. I don't knock into door jambs, don't bang my arm around. Just lucky, I guess.

That sucks Wayno. At least you got it back. Too bad it cost so much.

Yeah, that definitely sucks. Glad to hear you got it back though. Wayno, I had a similar experience to you. I had just gotten back to my truck from jet skiing where my rolex was wrapped up in my towel. Totally forgetting, I pulled the towel out of my truck to dry off my face. It was slow motion that I saw my sub about to hit the gravel road.

One common theme boys, they are safer on your arm, than anywhere else.

OUCH!!
![]() 700 bucks is a rather steep amount....but I know that when a crystal gets smashed, Rolex automatically carry out a full service too in case some tiny pieces of the crystal have entered the movement. Just be a little more cautious the next time. Cheers - JJ ![]()

Moral of the story? Leave your Rolex on your wrist!
In the years I've been posting on these forums, I would say that over 95% of the stories where a watch gets damaged start with "...I took my Rolex off..." and end with "...$XXX later..." Keep 'em on, boys and girls, they're safer that way! ![]()

Most of what I have read seems to be accidents, like dropping on to
tiles in bathroom.Sapphire in very tough but can chip especially on the edges.

Wayno - sorry to hear about your little accident. I agree with the others that $700 US is a lot to have the crystal replaced. With a full service it makes more sense. For comparison, when I sent my YM in for a full service plus new crystal is cost me a little over $800 Canadian.......

Sorry to hear of your woes Wayno. I had my crystal replaced recently after my wife accidentally scratched it with her ring. Mine cost about £60, you were fleeced by the sound of it.

Speaking from expierence, when I challenged a door frame with my Tudor Chrono and smashed the crystal, Rolex Dallas insisted on a full check of the movement, so I am sure they did the same in Waynes case.

Having posted the following last night:
"I don't knock into door jambs, don't bang my arm around," guess what I did this morning. Banged the GMT into the door jamb in the bathroom. Fortunately, the wood is softer than the crystal. The watch came through the experience with flying colors - took the bang in stride. I'm not sure I can say the same about the door jamb, though. Just goes to show you, don't speak too soon. It may happen to you. ![]() ![]()

He wasn't really fleeced.....remember, in your case it was just a scratch and a replacement - that's all - no service. In his case, since the crystal was smashed, Rolex had no alternative but to open up the entire movement to check for tiny broken fragments of crystal. Hence, a full service was also essential. I've been told this by David (Mansor) himself when I once asked him what would happen if the crystal was smashed. JJ ![]()

We need to ask James(Gedaken) about how these watches take being dribbled in the shower like a basket ball.

My crystal was a train wreck. A full service was recomended and I agreed. Glad to say it looks brand new a year later.
