Places to go in Maui?

Heading there in a month. Looking for places to go, things to do and a few restaurants to try out. Definitely into the local dive type places.

Suggestions?

Were going back in June.
If you're looking for 'dive' places Kihei is the place to go. Best beaches on the island. Charlie Young Beach, Kamiloi I, II. III are voted some of the best beaches in the world. Moose McGillicuttys is one of the eateries/bars on the Kihea strip that will suit your needs and there are many more there. Have fun, we will.

The tour of Pearl Harbour was worth my time.

The day long trip over to the other side of the island was pretty neat.

I would have taken one of the helicopter rides, but my wife didn't want to go.

Make sure you go snorkling.

Ton's of good restuarants.

If you have a Costco membercship, you can save on some of your food costs. It's close to the airport.

There is a pizza place in Wailea that is good, it is right across from the strip mall but i forget the name. Kihei also has a lot of "dive" establishments.

Mama's Fish House near the North Shore. One of the best meals I've had the joy to experience.
Also, visit my friend, Curly Mendez, in the West Maui Mountains. He has a fruit stand there with amazing views.
Enjoy,
dP

Do the bike trip DOWN Mt. Haleakala. It was a blast. You pay them to take you up to the top then fly down the mountain making various stops for views and a small meal, then ending up at a beach I forget the name of. I did the Road to Hana but did not drive myself. It was just my wife and I and we paid some guy to drive us in a jeep and he knew all the best stops.

Better yet, ride UP Mt Haleakala first.

At 5 hours and 4 minutes to climb to the top it was easy to acclimate to the altitude.

Even wearing Lycra?

It truly was the ride of a lifetime. Almost rode off the side on one of the switchbacks on the way down. Overall, 6 1/2 hours, 73 miles, 10,023 ft up, and 10,023 ft down.

Hali'imaile General Store is a very good option if you want to go Upcoutry and I highly recommend it. (I prefer the food there to Mama's. Mama's does have the best view though)

If in Kihei, I also recommend Kamaole I and Da Kitchen for a quick and easy plate lunch. If you have to go to a luau, try the Old Lahaina luau.

I don't know if she is still there, but if you head South on Makena Road right at the enterence to Big Beach parking lot there is a lady selling the very best fish wraps!!!!!! Her truck is backed up to her friend selling fresh fruit. I cannot say enough about her food! Ono!!!! (When I spoke to her last, she was in school for accounting or something like that. I don't know if she is still in business)

The Baron & Leeds at the Shops at Wailea has a nice palce to get your Rolex fix.

Just got back from our fourth trip in five years

Maui Tacos is a great lunch and cheap dinner spot - The one across from KamII beach is the best on island. The one by Safeway is a close second.

Our big splurge every year is Mama's Fish house. It has been exceptional every time whereas some of the big resort restaurants have never left me completely wowed. Go for lunch though. Better views and a little cheaper.

Paia Fish Market on the corner in Paia is great cheap plate lunches and dinners with awesome fresh catch.

The nicest beaches are around Wailea. Look at Keawakapu Beach, Secret Beach and Long Beach. A lot less crowds than Kam I-III.

A previous poster recommended Matteo's Pizza in the wailea strip center. We keep forgetting that one but have heard nothing but great things about it.

Shaka Pizza delivers to your condo and they are great in a pinch.

Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice is awesome if you are around Lahaina.

We also went to Lahaina Grill and it was excellent. We had their tasting menu.

We sometimes stay at the Royal Lahiana while in Maui. My brother and his family live in Wiluku which is south of Lahaina. Traveling to his house you drive a road along the beach for a good period of time. The locals BBQ on the beach and driving by you get wiffs of the best smelling BBQ you can imagine. They're cooking Huli Huli chicken and sell them. You gotta try it! Its the most deliciuos BBQ we ever had. Always on our list of foods to eat while there(several times a visit). Many places make it and even the schools have huli huli fund raisers where you can get it in large parking lots on weekends. You'll likely smell the fragrant aroma while driving around.

Go to Lahaina town and see the old court house and the big banyan tree and do some shopping on the streets. Plus, you can do Whaler's Village in Kaanapali, it is nice to do some shopping as well. If you like golf, there are several places to golf, two course in Kaanapali alone (North and South courses). Have fun!

Great little area to spend a couple hours just window shopping if nothing else.

Grew up in Hawai'i. From 6 months to 13 yrs old. All that time on Oahu. Didn't discover Maui until recently. It's a blast.
So, far all tips posted are great. Just chiming in that I wish you loads of fun and aloha.

Get this book; "Maui Revealed". You won't regret it.

We used to sell huli huli chicken at school gigs. Here's a pre-made oh so ono version to order for mainland grilling:

Maui is great.. you won't need anybody giving you ideas... The old Capital city of Lahaina, Road to Hana, Haleakala Crater, Snorkeling at Honolua Bay with the big Turtles, Dukes for Burgers dinner or Hula pie.. You won't have enough time.

The Whales may even still be in in May...

We go there every year.. just got back a couple of months ago, we'll be there next week, then again in December for Christmas..

Take your camera..

Mama's Fish House and the road to Hana. If your a pilot you can rent a plane, we rented a Cessna, at the airport and toured the island for a couple of hours for under $250.00.
