Yet another DD I vs DD II thread? Yes!

I take exception to all the criticism of the bezel on the DD II. To me, it seems appropriate to the size of the watch. Here are a I and II side-by-side. They don't look so dramatically different in overall style; only in size. Look at each one in isolation and it's clear to me, at least, that both are just fine as a DD. Look at them together in a shop; and the II is clearly much bigger overall and it becomes easy to focus on that and enter an almost OCD state of mind in comparing the two versions with the familiar traditional size being the baseline for comparison. I know; been there; done that; moved on.

I see 36 mm DDs "in the wild" that look absolutely fantastic on the wearer; and I've seen my DD II (not many "in the wild" yet) on others and it looked great on them. I think in the end how they look on one's arm is the determinative factor on the 36 vs 41 decision; and that Rolex made a smart move in offering the larger alternative.

So...when it first came out, I focused on the bezel size when I looked at photos; and I was critical; but real world experience "in the wild" with both DD versions has convinced me that it's just like shoe size; get the one that fits best and if a wider width helps; go for it. To me, the larger bezel is a good idea for the larger dial. I chose the II for better or worse because it just felt better. I gave up my I to get the II.

The DJII bezel does look fat when side by side with the DJ. But I believe it is well proportioned to the case when it is on your wrist.

Either way - great addition, er, replacement!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I know when I try Day Dates, I always try the DD first. But at 6'3" and my old eye's I just can't see myself getting anything but the DDII if I ever actually get one.

Great side-by-side Otto. Nice that you could get the same watch (gold choice and dial) to compare. I've decided on the DDII, the bezel only looks really big when you have it right next to a 36mm. Now comes challenge number II: dial choice. I think the champagne dial looks too monochromatic, and I'd like something simple, black or white. Then the next question in stick dial or romans. So many choices...

The champagne dial only looks monochromatic in photos...
The crystal adds a bit of glow to the dial and it really dances on the wrist...

The I vs II debate is a tough one. I have the DD I and a couple DJ I's and a DJ II. ..

Everytime I have either on my wrist it seems like the perfect watch...

I do think that the bigger size adds a bit of sportiness...

And the wider bezel reflects light in a way that you have to see in the wild to truly appreciate...

I think that there is no right answer...

I disagree, respectfully. IMHO, the bezel on the DDII looks flat and out of proportion. while the bezel on the DDI is sharp, crisp and perfect.

No question a live wrist test is the best way to determine what size works best. Proportions can be hard to quantify in pics.

the daydateII has to be tried on to compare it with the daydate, imho the daydateII trumps the original.

Otto made the right decision, I have always thought that the daydate would be perfect if they upsized it and when rolex did they made perfection!

The trend is to go bigger, even PP is going big. I like DDII at 41, any bigger however, would ruin the oyster case look.

I have a Small wrist, but I was making the same comparison myself. I am thinking of the same watches, but preowned. I guess a 36 mm 118238 goes for about $15k used?

I didn't care much for the DDII or DJII at all.
That is, until I actually tried them on . I love the proportions and the bezel.
These look much different on the wrist than sitting in a showcase.
I can surely see one in my future.

They are both fabulouse watches. Come on guys it's solid gold what's not to like about them. If you could turn a turd into gold people would still stare it.
