Which Calatrava?
Hello,
I am looking to buy my first Patek (being a Rolex guy for many years). I decided to go with a rose gold Calatrava. However, I cannot choose between these 3 models: 1. 5123R 2. 5127R 3. 5296-010R All 3 have similar dials and hands. However 5123R is a manual movement and was just released this year in Basel but has no date. I want to ask your advise and comments about these 3 watches. Also conc and pros between a manual wind 215 movement versus 324 automatic. The 324 automatic looks nicer to me but may be the manual wind is more robust. Also the 5123 has a snap back while the automatics have a screw in back, which is probable and advantage. Greatly appreciate your comments! |

I personally wouldn't choose the 5123R but that's only because I'm not such a fan of its lugs (they're going under the case and the a bit too round case isn't my cup of tea). Having said that, if I had a collection of Rolex watches like you I would probably go with the 5127R because its shape makes it look like a real dress watch and therefore would make it look more unique in your collection. Besides, the lines of it, the crown guards and the lugs look very fancy.
I personally don't think there is such a big difference in those movements toughness. I like the idea of having a manual winding dress watch but an automatic sure is more useful if you wear it rather often (besides, one can only love Patek's 21kt gold rotors). As for the case back, I don't think it should influence your choice because you will most probably never open the case yourself (I strongly recommend you to leave this to a professional watchmaker if not Patek itself). In the end, it's your decision and they all look fantastic but that's my opinion! I hope you will enjoy your Patek a lot when you'll have it!

If I bought a Calatrava it would not be a daily wearer for me. So having or not having a date wouldn't be an issue for me. I would also probably go for simple more elegant dial. The 5123 would more than likely be the one I would chose.

Personally, I would choice the 5127R, that piece gas always been one of my favourite Calatrava's.
Simple design but very classy.

I would go with a 5120, small but a nice classic dress watch with a real nice auto movement. If hey made a rose gold version I would want it even more:)

I prefer white gold but if I have to pick a rose gold Calatrava, it will still be the 5127R!

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for all of your valuable thoughts and feedback! I really appreciate it. Looks like 5127 gets the preference here. |

But more importantly have you determined which one you prefer?

Very good point! We can always give you our opinion but we don't want to literally choose for you. Only you can decide which one to get and it depends on your personal preferences.

Best Calatrava is the Officers Watch (IMHO)...the Patek Philippe 5153J
Check out the opening back that shows the movement (or not)...best get it in the Gold version, I just tried the White Gold version at the AD, and I must say the RG version is much nicer...check out that Hinged Dust Cover in the 360 mode in the Patek Site... |

Are watch pix banned on this sub-forum?
I see the model numbers but not the watches.

Have you considered the 5119, or are you going for something that looks a little younger?

Yes, I tried 5119 but decided to go with 5127R at the end. Thank you guys for all the input! Will post pics once I have the watch. Just placed an order and it is my first Patek (hopefully last too).

Thanks everyone! I learned a lot from this forum. Being a Rolex guy for 7 years, Patek is a new thing for me. Never thought I would want a higher end watch than Rolex. Tried Patek on 2 weeks ago and just had to have one. Hopefully it will be my exit watch, if such thing exists.
