for first Patek, 5205 or 5146?

Well, i have few rolexes and now im interested with Patek.(yes it happens!) but of course i have do savings first...

I look around and compare the specification etc, i come up with 2 models which sings to me and both are annual calendar (the most 'affordable" complications...

Which will you suggest for me for my 1 st ?

Whether it is 5205 or 5146 Slate?

For me 5146 but to each his own. Taste is subjective and in this case you can't lose with either choice...Cheers,

Both are real masterpieces and I must say I like the two of them but the 5146 wins the match for me! However, I'd strongly recommend you to try both on and see which one you really prefer as this choice, as far as I know, will not be easy at all!

I prefer the 5146r Gold with the cream dial though the slate dial 5146 isn't bad either!

5205 gets my vote...

It's because I prefer an instantaneous calendar watch and the design such as concave bezel and pierced lugs are mesmerizing. But that's me and taste does differ.

prefer the 5146, slate goes really well with white metals. but for Yellow and rose gold, I 'd stick with the cream dial.

For me neither of those two is my first choice; In terms of annuals, I prefer the 5396G....

Such a subtle beauty....

Both are incredible watches, however I would go with the 5205, as I find it more viewer friendly and easier to read. The older I get the harder it is to read those indices.

I prefer window dates to the dial dates, so the 5205 or 5396.

Me too, but usually the dial complications allow them to make the watch much thinner, which is the appeal of the dial complications on some PPs. I don't wear a suit a lot so it is a non-issue for me, and I find the apertures more aesthetically appealing....

I'm more of a short sleeve guy, so thickness doesn't bother me either.

5146 in RG with slate dial, every day of the week and twice on Sunday's, unless you can pony up the extra money for a 5960

The 5960R is indeed a wonderful timepiece! A great choice if somebody wants something that looks a tad sportier.

5205g

Easy 5205 won for me.

Doesn't matter black or grey dial both looks really great and got their own character.

I choose grey over black due to the legibility issue.

Just to clarify, neither of these pieces have an instantaneous calendar.
Both will take the same amount of time to change. Usually the final click of the date takes place at 01.30 hrs each morning.

To be able to say that your Patek has a true instant calendar, than unfortunately, you will have to climb waaaaaay up the Patek ladder to say a 5207P or 5208P

Regards

Tony

Are you wearing that Patek with shorts? This is absolutely great!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, those complicated watches are just that versatile, looks great on your wrist as well!

Now that would be a rather expensive hour and a half, wouldn't it?

My vote is 5205 with the grey dial. I love the 5146 as well, but something about the dial design makes me worry it will look dated in 10 years. IMHO the 5205 has a design that will age better. Make sure to post some wrist shots once you make your choice!

As a 5146 owner, obviously I'm biased, but I never even considered the 5205, as they're two very different annual calendar designs. The 5205 is a post modern with its concave bezel, unusual cut-out lugs and follows the current trend towards larger i.e., 40mm case sizes. The 5146 is slightly scaled back at 39mm and (to me at least) has a more classic appearance with a traditional bezel, lug shape, and leaf hands.

However, the dial is what I really love about this watch. Others don't seem to appreciate the closely spaced sub dials that sit above the mid-line, but I really like them. The sub dials are pulled in tighter than most other complicated Pateks, but they're still well balanced and give the 5146 its unmistakable unique appearance. Placing the sub dials closer towards the canon pin allows for those marvelous applied 12-3-9 markers which gives the dial marvelous legibility even for a "busy watch". The dial reminds me of classic Rolex dials found on models such as the Explorer and certain rare vintage Submariners. I also love the beautiful closed chapter ring. Other differences are the 5146 has luminous while the 5205 does not, and the power reserve indicator is a useful feature of 5146.

Anyway they are two very different designs for different tastes. Who can say what people will think of the 5146 ten years from now, but I do think it will age well because it represents an evolution in Patek's classic annual calendar line and IMO, "classic" is synonymous with "timeless".
