Icon7 Happy 75th Birthday Dad!

I can think of no better watch to commemorate a life milestone better than a Rolex!

My father worked his whole life, took care of our family and decided to reward himself when he turned 50 with his first and only Rolex purchase, a new YG Day-Date. He was so excited and wore it daily for 25 years without exception other than the time it went off to the RSC for service.

His 75 birthday was approaching and I got to thinking, what better way to celebrate and honor my father than to get him his second Rolex. I have over the past few months been showing him different styles of watches. I told I'm I was interested in purchasing another watch for myself and wanted to hear his opinion. I discovered he wasn't a fan of watches with numbers on the bezel...too sporty or dark colored dials as he said he found them harder to read. My dad has pretty large wrists (which unfortunately I didn't inherit ) and commented he wished his DD was a little larger. He also said one of his poker buddies recently got a TT Sub and he liked the SS/TT look.

So, I had it pretty narrowed down...40+mm, TT, light colored dial with no numerals on the bezel.

Yep, he described perfectly a new DateJust II in YG/TT with an Ivory stick dial and fluted YG bezel. I of course looked to see if one of our own trusted TRF sellers had such a model and Tony(Justrolexes) had the very one I sought. After a very smooth transaction...thank you Tony...I had the watch shipped to me in AZ so I could give it to him in person.

We finished dinner and I asked him to sit down in his office then I had the family come in. My sister and I threw a nice party for him along with over 70 of their friends and he said that was enough of a great present so wasn't expecting anything else. He was very surprised when I handed him a nice gift wrapped package and told him "Happy Birthday Dad!"

You should have seen the look on his eyes when he opened that box and saw the DateJust...PRICELESS! It was the look we all get the first time we lay eyes on something special like a new Rolex and just grin from ear to ear. He was speechless and had to grab a tissue to not let us see he was a little misty eyed.

I ask do you like it? He says, "It's gorgeous and I love it!"

The next day we all stop by to say goodbye as we head to the airport and my dad says, "Here, I have something for you" and hands me his YG DD in it's original box. I'm like why are you giving me your watch? He says I don't need more than one watch and you're going to inherit it one day anyway so better you should enjoy it.

Ok, now he had me a little speechless. I try to refuse, tell him I want him to keep it for dressy occasions but he was insistent. Said he loves his new watch and it's more than dressy enough. After 5 minutes of trying to get him to change his mind I just give him a hug and thank him. Didn't see that one coming so now dad has his new Rolex to enjoy and I have a special watch from my father to cherish.

Happy 75th Birthday Dad and wear your new watch in the best of health!

Fantastic story. Nice for your dad to be able to see you enjoy his old watch while he enjoys the new one you picked out for him. Love to see a shot of you wearing your Dad's DD to finish off the story.

What a wonderful way to honor your father...and it's beautiful the way he reflected your love by giving you his cherished Rolex. You were right to accept it.

Happy Birthday, indeed...

Here you go. Going to have it serviced since by dad's recollection it has been about 8 years since it's last.

Not in too bad of shape for a 25 year old gold watch worn daily.

This is one of the best I've read on TRF. Talk about a special event for the two of you.

Please tell your dad the watch looks incredible on him.
