Why is the New Explorer II 42mm not more popular?
Just got one myself in white and absolutely love it. The submariner (black) is great but everyone has one. Especially if you add the "knock offs"!
This watch is uncommon and understated. I'm thinking this one of the best stainless Rolex sport watches in a while. Don't see that many discussions on here about this watch. Anybody else feel the same way? |

I find the reasons presented here quite convincing :

I tried on this and the subc and gmtc and the Expy was just too plain looking/unremarkable imho and there was no way I was gonna pay a similar amount of money for it, I think it should be priced £1K/$1.5K less and then itll sell well as now sales are pretty poor I hear.

I agree, the Submariner is one of the more popular ones, but don't discount the many other choices we have. As with anything, it's a personal choice. Enjoy the 216576 it's a beautiful piece. Cheers

It's on my shopping list, all I need to do is px with my Omega 2502.33. Looking for a local trade as I type and hope to have a white face on by month end - a cracking looking tool watch without the bling,

The Sub is a great watch but it is such a "safe" choice. To me, the Explorer II is the sleeper in the Rolex line up hands down. If I had to make a Sophie's choice, my 216570 makes it out alive every time. Then again I like the non traditional Rolex models and might have chosen a different first Rolex than my Sub if I went back in time. Still upset with myself that I did not at least go LV.

Between the Sub C, GMT IIC and Explorer II, I ended up with the Explorer II. Couldn't be happier.

The ExpII is popular...
As a matter of fact I was stricken with the dreaded decision on a Black Face ExpII or a Sub-C Date to go with my 39mm Exp. If I could I would have bought both but only one for now. Many questions I asked myself on what I wanted and needed from my second Rolex and the Sub-C Date was my better choice. Congrats PS... Post some pictures please!!!

I think the GMT is the dual time zone king in the Rolex line-up. The Expl.II was definitely designed for a different, yet smaller user community. But for most owners it is just a robust dual TZ watch.
Nothing exciting per se - just getting the job done in plain old SS - no pretentious TT or precious metal cases, no diamond or exotic dials - best we keep the secret safe and stop talking about it now!

Same reason the Explorer II 40mm was not popular.
Has this "rare and discontinued" model become significantly more expensive and desirable? Not that I've seen. It's an odd ball. Having said that, I regularly consider getting an old style polar explorer.

It actually seems like there are a lot of 216570 Exp II incoming threads over the past month or two. I will be posting my official "incoming" photos of my black 216570 tomorrow :-)

Dive watches have a strength and allure to them that is hard to overcome.

I think the orange hand, stainless steel bezel and size are factors that polarise opinions on its appeal.
I never thought of it as unpopular, though of course I see more subs and Datejusts in the wild. |

Love the watch but just looks silly on me, far too big. Otherwise I would have no issue buying it.

I think historically the Explorer 2 has never been hugely popular. But I think that will slowly change now with the 42mm.

Everything I've seen on it would make it seem to be very popular

It is far more popular now that it was at 40mm. It has better esthetics that the prior model. I would not choose it over a Subc or a GMTIIc but I will add it to my collection in the near future.

Just looking at the size of the hour and minute hands on the newer model makes me absolutely sure that I would choose the classic 16570 ! Smaller, nicer !!

My guess
Rolex has two signature looks:
1) a dark bezeled dive watch 2) a fluted bezel dress watch Models that capitalize on these designs are most popular. Why don't you that many of them? 1) Rolex offers two similarly priced GMT watches and the GMT Master exploits the Submariner aesthetics and the Explorer II does not. 2) Not everyone wants a travel watch I wonder what percentage of Rolex's volume is comprised of Datejusts, Submariners and GMT Master IIs?
