Rolex Newbie Question

Hi everyone:

It is my birthday soon and i decided to get a Rolex. I went in to an AD thinking I'd get a Lady Datejust 31mm but fell in love with the 35mm YM. SS/Platinum.

I bought it and it is here with me. My issue is that it is quite heavy (100g). Does it get better? Will I get used to the weight? My wrist hurts a little bit and I "know" the watch is there.

I wanted to hear from others to see if it gets better. I might have a small window to exchange it with a fees. The AD is being very nice and kind. However, I love this watch so if it gets better, I'd prefer not to do that.

I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it but the weight is killing my tiny wrist.

Yes...you will get used to the weight to some extent. The real problem MAY be, (and I'm just guessing), that you've got the watch flopping around like a bracelet rather than properly sized where it sits firmly (but not tightly) in the CENTER of your wrist. Make sure you get some help removing the appropriate links if you're not familiar with how to do this.

I don't have it "flopping' around on my wrist. It is set right. Thank you for your suggestion. I like this watch a lot so thank you for weighing in.

Thank you. :) I don't want it to be uncomfortable. I wonder how much a smaller datejust weighs (31 mm steel)

Comfort is usually based on what we are familiar with and is frequently subjective..

Those who wear extra large and bulky watches find a "smaller" Rolex to be uncomfortable and small because they are conditioned. Likewise, those who seldom wear a watch or who frequently wear a smaller/lighter fashion watch or other brand will find a mid-sized Rolex large and heavy at first..

I do not think that I would say that any Rolex is truly "uncomfortable", merely different from another and easy to get used to after a short time.

Just get a few stainless steel bracelets, and
wear them on your other arm to to counter balance the weight!

Thank you so much. I appreciate that. It is already getting better. I love this watch so much. I have others so I won't wear it non stop.

I will go and get it checked out. I think it is a bit loose but I like it like that. Otherwise, it would be too tight. It doesn't move around on my wrist.

Rotfl! now that is an idea. I'd opt for other metals, it is only 100 grams. :D

Congrats on your choice! My first was also a YM. If your wrist actually hurts, there might be something else at play that you may want to look into. Personally, I like a heavier watch because I know it's there, I know that it's substantial and not kind of flimsy. While I know that weight isn't a measure of quality, it just feels better to have something that I feel is going to be with me for the long haul. I didn't take off my YM for the first 10 years I wore it. Do you have any wrist shots we can see?

Yes my wrist hurts. All my other watches are 65-75 grams. This one is 100 grams! I have a gold watch that is 125 grams so this is the second heaviest one I own at the moment.

Let me take some shots. I will be back.

It's a beauty! It does look a bit loose, however. I'm sure your AD would have no problem adjusting it for you. They can make tiny adjustments using the springbar in the clasp. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to take out a link. Sorry to hear it hurts.

Thanks so much. I will try to make it tighter, although, I am afraid that might stop blood circulation in my tiny wrist.

I'd suggest having the dealer do it unless you've had experience doing that sort of thing. I only say that because it's brand new and it would be so sad if you accidentally scratched it.

I think you will get used to it. If it is comfortable I would not change the size until you give it some time. I have not heard of a watch being painful though....

Thank you so much. It is a delight to watch the seconds hand go round. I know people on this forum don't like this watch but to me, this is the perfect under the radar Rolex.

Thank you. I fell in love with it instantly. This is the only one that spoke to me. I am really hoping that it gets better as I'd hate for this to be a safe queen.

I have bony, tiny wrists. It sucks because I like larger dials. I will see how it feels over the next couple of days.

Congratulations!

Don't worry too much about the weight, you'll get used to it. It took about 2 weeks for my wife to get used to her 36mm SS DateJust and now you cant get it off. She originally wanted it very loose and I explained that it would be more uncomfortable like that and it would smack the back of her wrist and she let me take out a few links, It's still quite loose but much better. So long as you don't have it flopping about, you'll be fine and it will feel like a part of your arm in no time!

I want to replace hers with a 36mm YG DayDate within the next 12 months so she'll need to get used to something even heavier. ... not going to be so easy this time...
