Rolex GMT-Master II Choice

I have spent a better part of the week searching for reference material to help me purchase a Rolex GMT-Master II watch. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find what I am looking for. If anyone can help a NOOB, it would be most appreciated. Here's the story:

I am a US International Airline pilot that would like to purchase the GMT II. From the research I have done thus far, from a price stand point, they are surprising close in price.

I want to purchase one that is post-2000 for various reasons (i.e. Luminosity, SEL, 3185, etc) and remain in the $5,000 range.

My main question is: Which post-2000 model would you want to purchase and why?

I want to eventually pass this watch on to my son as an Heirloom.

IMHO, the best GMT II is the A, K, or P series from 2000 to 2003 or so. They are the years Rolex made the case w/ solid end links and lug holes, the best of classic and modern. This allows for easy bracelet [Oyster or jubilee] and/ or strap changes.
Plus, you can exchange 3 different inserts, blue/ red [Pepsi], black/ burgundy [Coke], and all black. Makes for the most versatile Rolex ever made [see below]. The price of these continues to climb and your price point is spot on for an example in excellent condition.

Thanks for the info. Hadn't thought of versatility regarding the bezels and bracelet. I'm currently leaning toward the Z series (2006 - Parachrom hairspring). Although it has "no holes", can I change out the bezel/bracelet on this model as well?

Yes, but it takes a bit more work or more expensive tools to do it without damaging too much. The bezel insert swap remains the same.

There are those who are charging ridiculous prices for the Parachrom hairspring movements. Not worth the hype, imho. YMMV.

I'd also suggest going into an AD and trying on the ceramic model if only to try the bracelet on the 116710.

Like Dan says, A, P, K (and early Y) are the best options, especially if you want something around US5k. Probably have to settle for no box or papers at that price, though.

I'm in a similar situation like you.

I was leaning towards a 3186 movement for a while but I still can't bring myself to pay the premium that's being asked these days. I might go the SEL + lug holes way, for the reasons stated by Dan. My 2004 Sea-Dweller with no lug holes requires too much work in order to change straps or bracelet. Much easier on my old Explorer II.

Thanks, guys. I'm still reading and researching my choices. I'm leaning toward a 2003 GMT-Master II (F series). What I'm seeing is that the vast majority of GMT watches from 2000-2003 are priced very close together... between $ 5,000 and $ 5,700. So, if they are relatively the same condition with the same features, why not go with the newer model?

If u don't want lug holes, go for the slightly later. No other reason not to.

As Adam said, don't forget the Y-series GMT-II's. My all black Y series is over 10 years old and is by far my favorite watch.

Rock, it seems I've narrowed my search down to a Y-series GMT Master II (2003). One of the reasons I am getting this watch is I want to pass it on to my son (Heirloom). His birthday is actually today, 9 Feb. He was born in 2003. If I could narrow down a particular model such as a Y series manufactured in Feb, I would be thrilled. But, getting a 9/10 condition Y would be more important to me.

Without the original bill of sale accompanying the watch, you can't even be sure the watch is from 2003, so narrowing it down to the month is probably not gonna happen.

An AD2 bracelet clasp code would indicate February 2003. The watch itself would likely be a few months later than that, but as far as hard evidence goes, apart from the bill of sale/warranty, that's as good as it gets for commemoration of the month/year.

My favourite GMT is the 1675, but if it is impossible.....
I love 16710 years 2000-2003 with sel and ..... lug holes....
