Looking to buy my first Tudor Sub

As the title suggests, I am in the market for a Tudor Submariner. My "grail" watch is a WG Smurf (love the blue / plain silver combo), but never see myself parting ways with the $35k reuired for entry. So a more reasonable solution in my eyes is to find a blue Tudor sub. I have been researching for a few weeks now, and think I have my search narrowed to a 79190 model. Here is my main criteria:

-- Watch must have a sapphire crystal (no plastic please)
-- Would prefer a 2824 ETA movement
-- While I appreciate the Snow Flake models, I prefer the lollipop style marker
-- I prefer the models w/ Rolex crown and case markings. However, I also like the newer models having the hour markers w/ white gold trim surround (all that i have seen with this feature have Tudor markings rather than Rolex). I am yet to see a model that has BOTH of these features. Am I missing something, or does this combination not exist?

Based on the above list, the 79190 hits most, but not all of my "wish list" items. Is there another Tudor sub model that I am not considering but should be? Blue 79190's seem pretty hard to come by, so I am open to exploring other models. Any guidance is appreciated.

I have the 79090 which is the model before the 79190. The 79090 has the acrylic crystal. I love acrylic because you can buff any scratch out and it more desirable by most Tudor collector's and probably easier to find. The Sub with the lollipop hands was the model before the 79090 can't remember the model number.

Perhaps I was wrong to use the term "lollipop" (still learning and am by no means an expert). Rather, I just meant non-snow flake.

A lollipop is different from the Mercedes hand. Mercedes refers to the style, has nothing to do with the car company.

You're not going to find a Tudor Sub which checks ever single box. Why not save up a bit more and get a Rolex Sub which will?

Unfortunately, Rolex doesn't offer what I want (at least not at a reasonably affordable price point). As mentioned, the one and only criteria that is inflexible is color (blue), and a $30k + Smurf is out of the question, and I don't care for the stainless / yellow gold combo, either. I believe that a Tudor sub is the perfect option.

Perhaps it would be helpful to upload a pic of exactly what I am looking for.





I found this on another watch forum. This is a 79090 that sold last year. The seller claims that this watch had a "service dial", which I understand to be a non-original dial installed by Rolex/Tudor upon service. I think it's going to be almost impossible to find with this exact dial, so my question is, could I specifically request this dial to be put in a 79190 upon service?

I didnt think I would like what the op was talking about but that is one fine sub. Would look great with a black Insert too because of the gloss dial.

The Aquanaut perhaps? The aquanaut is the tudor sub replacement. I owned one, fine watch

The only way you would be able to get everything you want would be to get a 79190 and have a service dial installed and replace the crown with a rolex crown. Even then though the caseback will not say Rolex and will only say Tudor.

You can get some but not all the combo you want.

79090-rolex crown and caseback (early models) but has a matte dial. You can have the dial replaced during a service. Acrylic crystal.

79190-Sapphire crystal but originally came with a matte dial. You can get a service dial with gold surrounds though it will have a tudor crown. Late model 79190's did come with the WG surround dial though finding one of those is very difficult.

Thank you for confirming this. I was under the impression that the 79190 also came with a Rolex crown / case back for some period of time, but that is not the case?

Depends on to which RSC you go. They don't like to give you the parts but some do in rare occasions. Chances are slim.

The 76100 is a better deal than the 79190s or 79090s. keep your eyes on ebay. the 76100s dont seem to be getting such great prices. i bought a nice one on a 9315 crimped band and love her.

The 76100 is more like a 79090. It's a plastic crystal. He 79190 is sapphire (iirc).

The 76100 has a quirky hour hand. It also has a matte dial. I really like matte dials. The 79090 is also matte. I am unsure of the 79190.

The bands on the 76100 are folded and a little more flimsy. I prefer the older watches

My grail is the WG sub also...I save like $25 and purchased a 79090 a few years ago, one of my daily favorites....Love the high-hat acrylic crystal
