- From classic to cult following: The GMT Master -

The Rolex GMT. My first memory of this watch was a re-run of Goldfinger at the age of 13 in which James Bond seduces Pussy Galore (Goldfinger's private pilot) - one of the first times a woman was known to wear a man's rolex on screen. This childhood memory may explain my fascination with seeing my wife wearing men's rolex sport watches to this day!!

The Rolex GMT. A watch which I have heard collectors say to have had a "gimmicky beginning" in 1954 with its collaboration design with Pan Am Airways, has certainly risen to fame as one of the most popular rolex watches.

The Rolex GMT. Pilots used the second time to display the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which led Rolex to the name this watch the “GMT Master.” Even though the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was replaced in 1972 to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by the aviation industry, the term GMT is still kept as part of the name of the “Rolex GMT Master.”

The Rolex GMT. Worn by many famous/infamous characters, including Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Marky Mark.

The Rolex GMT. The GMT line-up is soon to get a new and very exciting addition with the WG Cerachrom Pepsi, Ref. 116719!

The Rolex GMT. One of my favorite watches. Ahough there are a number of spectacular Rolex GMTs out there, my favorites and the ones I own are Refs. 16710 and 116718.

These are my thoughts on the Rolex GMT. Thanks for reading and now some pictures. Be well.

Nice looking watch. But how does the dual time actually work? Can you set the bezel so you can tell the time in California if you are on New York time?

Yes, you can set dual time. Here is a resource on how to do it from our very own community!

I always though Honor Blackman was a bit on the "rough" side, so for me it wasn't such a stretch for her to wear a man's watch...

Thomas, liked your opinions here. Certainly, the bearded look of Che Guevara wearing GMT is an iconic image I think. Although Tom Selleck is not a Che Guevara, he did immense contribution to the popularity of GMT.

Great post Thomas.

For years the GMT seemed to be in the shadows of the Submariner. In the last few years it's a reference that has come into it's own with a few heavy weight collectors thinking it's collectability is on the rise.

A reference that saw lot of use in the military once upon a time, it also was a favorite with the early astronauts.

So much history.

Oh and speaking of,..

Thanks Mike and yes, very true. The sub really seemed to dominate the collector space, even as early as a couple of years ago and now the GMT is coming alive!

Ahhh yes, great picture.

Indeed! Two great watches. The BLNR has the appeal of the bi-colored bezel for night and day which the 718 does not :(

Indeed! Very nice Lee. The 16700 is a great watch and was close to buying one before I found a 16710 that caught my eye.

When I bought my GMT is was between that & a Submariner. Even though I am a diver, the time zone functions seemed more useful for me as a frequent traveler. Being able to adjust the time without stopping the watch is a great feature. The Red/Black combo really caught my eye too.

Agreed! I own a few divers as well however! The bi-colored bezel are awesome!
