Comex and the new SD
According to the press release, Comex had a hand in it's design, so does this mean they are using it in the field for real. Oris this just another publicity stunt.
By the way I reakon Dolce and Gabanna or Gucci had some input, what with that crazy writing on the crystal.

I also read that :) Dunno if its true. Does anyone know how practical this watch is? I mean, how deep do commercial divers go these days? I read that Comex set the record in the 70's at around 570m or so... and that's unchallenged?

Well comex still have a website and its mentioned by name in the press release as one of the partners.
"A series of rigorous tests Because deep-sea diving requires absolute reliability and safety, each Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA must pass Rolex’s rigorous waterproofness tests. To this end, special equipment has been developed with the help of COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise), a world-renowned French company specialising in underwater engineering and hyperbaric technologies." http://www.comex.fr/suite/pres/accueil%20anglais.html

How would you ever take a watch down 3900m??? Unless you stuck it on a remote controlled submarine there is no way a human could ever go that deep.
(I know for testing purposes they just simulate the pressure)

I remember i saw an aricle once where one guy strapped his watch on a remote submarine. The watch was a SD and it went all the way down to 1200 meters it looked pretty neat

I'm suspecting more wanna-be divers will be wearing this watch than the real McCoy.

I don't even want to go 100 meters down, but I want to buy the new Sea Dweller anyway--isnt' that crazy? Marketing is what sells watches, not reality.

I believe they used a simulator to test the depth rating on the SDDS.
They just put the watch into a special pressurized chamber which mimicked the pressures exerted in a real situation and observed how it functioned. You guys didn't think they chartered a boat to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and then tied-off the watch to a 12800 ft rope and drop it into the sea did you??????????? |
