Ladies PO SS No Date Vint 6618 few things off?
Normally I research things BEFORE I buy - on a whim, since a vintage leather band oysters is on my bucket list, I bought this Used Ladies Rolex Perpetual Oyster online. Person is relatively new to eBay has sold quite a few parts & a few older higher end watches. Reviews came out ok after purchase.
Box came today. It's 3am here is what I have learned so far from 10 am yesterday: Model etched on top side: 6618 (1960-1973) Serial # other end: starts 322 (6-digit) (indicating 1944 production year) I believe on the rolex site under history it states the Ladies OP did not come into play until 1954 SO.......that all seems off?! Ladies Oyster Perpetual No Date No "swiss" under 6, however; I noted that in the forums on another one in its "before" picture. Under loupe I think the face may have been painted. Wanted to know what ya'll think. I've seen other vintage models w/out the word Swiss for sale in what appears to be reputable storefronts. Dropping water on the case- it beads up, keeps beading into big ball of water, however (to me) it looks kinda "mirrorory" from the side. not sure. Crown pulls out fine, first stop to wind, second I adjusted time. I do not see a "o" ring as many of you mention. The sweeping hand does stop when I pull it all the way out, but as I understand it, the hacking feature came after 1972, so that can't be an indicator here. The movement of the hand appears to flow nice. I do hear very faint fast ticking when I hold it up to my ear. But no other noises at all. I've read, watched videos from Rolex stores with mixed reviews all day about the ticking so I don't know what to believe. I don't think they could be addressing some of the vintage models. The box appears to be an after-thought. The very very worn green seal indicates a # that does not appear to match any of the two numbers above. My second question that I've spent the last 4 hours looking at is the Rolex word font style. I read and saw the chart w/various fonts that have been used. It seemed to blocky to me, however I did see this font on a few other models. So, if anyone else has a 6618, what style do you have? When a watch dial is repainted, is there a chance the person who did this, just did a lousy job and the watch insides could be real but it could just have a sucky dial? Obviously, I'm weighing if I want to spend $125 to have the watch opened to verify its authenticity since I've already formulated my own questions above. So, bring on your 2 cents! Thanks a bunch. Pics I forgot to attach
the first set
As I am looking at it further this morning, I see more things: Hand length. The first "dot" of the crown on the stem? |

I don't know enough to give a decent thumbs up or down on the watch itself, but I want encourage you to spend the buck twenty five and you can sleep better.
My gut tells me you got a Rolex and perhaps the dial has been monkeyed with. I hope it checks out for you. |

I think someone charging you $125 to remove the case back is ripping you off...just my opinion.

Well, I was optimistic that I didn't see a bunch of hands down emoticons & "fake" replies when I logged on.....so yes I think I will take LA's advice & seek a place to open the back. I did a search from the Rolex site that led me to 2 places in a mall (like Big Box type jewelry stores for R) & a dealer closer to me who had the listing of the $125 charge to open the back...based on the costs to service every 5 yrs you guys have been posting (its like a BMW)....I was thinking $125 was probably normal.
CrownC. You've got me puzzled on the date. Did you base it on watches that look similar from the Lady's OP thinking that the case has been as I see other posts on "frankensteined? & not the original) -the 322 series on the charts I see read that date, yours in more line with the LOP range....I'll have to go back & double-check the # under loupe. Anyhow, please keep posting, I will keep reading. It may be 2-3 weeks before I can get the watch in, but I will post a follow-up for sure. I've attached some more pics of the face. One is natural daylight. |

Duct Does Wonders to Open a Rolex
So I watched a video of a guy who opened a rolex using a rubber ball and I creatively wrapped Duct Tape around a wash cloth and it worked - I took the pics of the back, got it closed up. the serials on the sides still the same, but fainter and don't have any words above them like I've seen in some other photos.
My ambien kicking in and I will be flying most of tomorrow so hopefully I will get to read up what the numbers on the silver case represent. |

Dial looks like it's been refinished.
