Do you keep your watches in a safe?

Hi all,
Kinda new here and I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but wondering if most of you keep your watches in a safe at home? I recently purchased my first Rolex, a new 114060 from our very own BodyBump (Oscar) and I just pulled the trigger on a slightly used Tudor. Now I'm thinking I might need a safe. I've got a couple of other nice watches (none as good as the Rolex though) and my wife has a couple of watches and some jewelry but I've never owned a safe. Since the Rolex arrived, I'm suddenly a little paranoid.
If you do have a safe, perhaps you could give me some ideas on what type to get.
Thanks in advance.

Don't worry, just post your street address here and the times when the house is empty....

Just insure them and you're good to.

Yes, I do keep them in a safe.

Get one that nobody can carry off with all your valuables inside..

Yes, in a safe used for storage of numerous items I don't want to get away.

Bank safe deposit box that way no need to worry about home invasion which one never knows. Better in the bank safe than sorry.

Call me crazy, but I would not want to have a safe installed in my home.I have only heard horror stories of inside jobs including my own parents who were robbed a few years back.

I would rather have insurance on my watch than install a safe.

I have specialist house insurance which covers jewelry and watches to a high value without my having to specify each one. I'd recommend looking into getting specialist house insurance (I just googled and went to an insurance broker). I found ordinary house insurance had a very low threshold for named items and once I'd bought a couple of watches the price of it soared.

So in theory I don't need to keep them in a safe.

But I still do just in case Mr Burglar comes a-knocking except for 2 on winders outside a safe.

However if I had any watches which I couldn't easily replace (e.g. vintage) then those would absolutely go in the safe.

My wife has some jewelry which has a very high sentimental value and that's in the safe too.

Along with my latest backup from my PC on an external drive i might add...

I bought a safe from Costco and got a guy in to just fix it to the concrete of the foundations. Or you could buy a hammer drill and do it yourself. Easy !

It's only small but big enough for quite a few watches - if you just put them on watch cushions and wrap them in trainer socks like I do. I know, I know ! But it works doesn't it ?

This exactly
One on the wrist, the rest at the bank.

Insure your Submariner. So if they ever rob or steal you, you can even smile while you hand it over.

If you buy a safe, really look at the specs of the safe before you purchase. A lot of the fancy-looking safes actually have relatively thin gauge steel on the sides and are pretty easy to hack into with an axe if you have the time and the space. The critical thing about the safe is placement -- somewhere out of sight from visitors and windows, somewhere it cannot easily be tipped over.

Also, you should absolutely buy a safe that is MINIMUM four times as much space as you think you need. Once you have one, you will start putting all sorts of things in there, and it will fill up incredibly fast.

Yes, I keep mine in a safe. I want to be able to switch it up whenever I want. Can't do that if they're locked up at the bank.

I collect safes/vaults along with watches. I wouldn't use anything less than a TL15 personally. That's 1 1/2 inches of steel in the door, and 1 inch in the body. A TL 15 is potentially insurable for approximately $250'000. "TL" is a rating system used by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to test safes, TL meaning "tool resistant." A TL15 means that UL beat the sh** out of the safe for 15 minutes, using hand tools, picking tools, mechanical or electric tools, grinding tools, and carbide drill bits, and if they were unable to penetrate it, the safe earns a UL TL15 rating. TL ratings go up to 30 minutes, and 60 minutes. There are higher levels of security, like TRTL (torch and tool resistant), and TXTL, (torch, tool, and explosive resistant.) Unfortunately, all of those ratings only apply to the door. So a TL15 IS only "tool resistant" for 15 minutes if the attack is on the door. So, there is one final rating, which is any of the above ratings, but with a "X6" after them. Example: TRTL15 X6 would be torch and tool resistant for 15 minutes on ALL 6 sides of the safe.

i have a safe for other things tht we dont mention , but watches tend to be put in a sock , in a draw , handy to get at ,, but hard to find ,,, unless your in the know.

impressed jack , i do like safes ,,, ive a few safe plates all polished and hung on the wall , i know the vntage stuff may not have the fire ratings etc , but they are still nice to look at ,
did a job a month ago , and part of the job was to clear a lot of filing cabinets with safe locks on them , they are a fantastic piece of engineering when you take a few apart to have a peep inside.

Hi Jack,

This is all very nice, as long as nobody awaits you or your wife at the door, and makes you open it yourself under gunpoint.
Then it becomes as useful as the shoebox under the bed.
Insure your valuables for the time you have them in the house or wear them, and store them at the bank when you don't wear them.

That's why you install a timelock! That way, it doesn't matter who's got the gun, or who's got the combination... It's not opening without the aid of a safe technician.
