Daytona SS Advice Appreciated

Hello Everyone,

Through a contact of mine, I have just been offered a choice of either a Daytona SS White Face or Black Face for purchase through a reputable dealer.

Both are brand new with the black at US$14K and the white at US$12.6K.
Both have inner bezel rehauts so I assume that they are Z or M series productions (just got off the phone, will be going down to take a look later on).

I know that I should get the one which I like most, but I like them both equally! If I had my way, I'd buy both, but alas my financial status does not allow that just quite yet!

He wants me to get back to him within 24hrs as he tells me that he has a customer who has already reserved one or the other. Apparently I get to pick first.

Would greatly appreciate any advice or comments from anyone. This is a big investment for me, and I need all the support I can get!

Many thanks in advance.

Kindest!
Sen.

Sen,

I generally like a black face watch, however, the Daytona is one exception. I personally favor the White Face on this model.

Good luck with this.. Those prices are a bit on the high side as MSRP is 9200USD.

hey sen, tough choice...im on the list for a white face one.

if im not mistaken i read somewhere the black face is more favoured by those in the east.

im sure i will stand corrected by those more experienced than me.

Wow, what a great position to be able to pick! I also prefer the white dial on this model, but you should try them both on and see which talks to you! Good luck and let us know the outcome!

I have both the black and white dial and find that although there are times that are great for either one, overall I favor the white dial if I had to chose.

Price aside, I'll give another vote for white.

Welcome to TRF!

My personal favourite is the white faced Cos.

The time is easier to read of the dial on this one, imho. Also, the white dial makes it "dressier" - again, this is just the way I perceive its appearance.

Having said that, I would never pay over MSRP for a BNIB Rolex watch.

I wouldn't have bought just to flip and was super happy when the one my AD got in was white. Both are nice, but I wouldn't have purchased a black one. Like the white on the best.

My vote would be for the black dial; however, the price would scare me away. Good luck on your decision.

Hi

I'm also from Australia and recently placed a deposit with an AD for a white dial sight unseen. All my other watches are black faced and the wife liked white and this was enough to swing me to the white dial.

A few weeks back I was in Malaysia and Daytona's, both black and white face, were easy to find at prices virtually indentical to those you mentioned.

I tried on both watches and am happy with my decision to go white dial.

In your situation the cost advantage of the white dial is also a great bonus.

If you're on the fence, I wouldn't make a predetermination. I would go there, look at both, try on both, them make a determination. Sometimes when having both side by side, one will speak to you more clearly.

Forgot to mention this... Carefully examine both. One may have more flaws than the other. I recently took at look at a SS GMT ll -C that had the stamped rolex crown at the top of the rehaut off center from the twelve marker. The sales lady tried to put if off like it was no big deal. But it was a big deal to me and I'm sure to anyone who's hooked on Rolexes like we are.

I'm happy for you.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks very much for the quick and detailed replies.
Had a look at both watches, both are very nice indeed, and flawless. I tried to do some bargaining, but he wouldn't budge haha.

The black face is indeed more favoured over in Asia, as evidenced by the price differential, in both the new and second hand markets.

And yes, it is a bit steep over MSRP. But the problem is, the wait list here is about 12 months.

Anyhow, I'll have to make a decision by tonight, will certainly let you guys know as soon as I do. I really appreciate everyones comments, I think Im a little more partial to the white face now hehe.

Regards!!!

I would pass on both if they are not at list price, the AD makes a profit already. Just my 2 cents.

Is the reputable dealer an AD? If so, then screw him for charging over MSRP.
