I recently came across a working 1030 date movement for nearly free of charge and was wondering which watch it would have come out of and would it be worth finding a case to put it in. Im new to the Rolex world and think this would be a fun project to tackle. Especially since it would be my first Rolex.

The 1030 was a workhorse for Rolex and was introduced in the 1950's.. The 1030 was used in the Explorers, Air-Kings, and Subs of the day. Might take a bit of research to find a model for the 1030 date..

This was their first movement to wind in both directions. Technology was pretty robust in the 50's so this movement only lasted a few years and was replaced in 1957 by the 1530 and then the 15xx movements pretty much dominated the next few decades..

It was sitting in my grandfathers dresser drawer. He said it was from the late 50's. There was damage to the case but over the years he doesnt recall what happened to it. All that is left is the movement. I asked if he knew which watch it came out of but he couldnt remember. Old age has gotten the best of him. All that I have into the movement is the gas money to pick it up. This is why I say it was nearly free since gas is $4.00 a gallon.

Having been without its protective case and seals/gaskets, the movement will definately need a good cleaning and oiling...

RSC would probably not touch it (new policy of turning down service on some old watches), but you could try an independent RSC like the one in San Francisco or a good watch maker like Bob Ridley.

Could you post a pic of it, please?

Memory lane. 14 years ago, selling this movement got me my first Rolex; a 6694. The rest is history. I have owned 12 Rolex' since then.
