How many winds

Loving my new 5990 however it's my first super high end brand and I am a bit unsure on winding. My rolex have typically had a 40-50 rotation wind however the instruction on the Patek suggests 10 - is this correct and can you over wind a modern watch

When my 5980 has stopped I give it 20-30 turns and set the time. Works perfect.

Thanks Ken, I completed 40 or so when I first put it on and hadn't read the instructions and all appears to be well but when I read 10 my heart was in my mouth for a minute or two

I think the idea of 10 turns is to get the watch going and get the wrist to wind up the rest through the rotor. But I find that at a desk job sometimes you don't get enough movement and wind up the watch just with the wrist, and so I also wind about 20-30 turns for all my watches (patek and non patek). But with the 5960 it has a PR indicator so that simplifies things :)

My 5711/5164 say 10 winds, and my 5235 says 10-20. I find 10 winds to be insufficient and the watch sometimes stops.

25-30 on all my watches seems to do it.

It takes 40+ to fill the PR on my 5712. Of course it would likely be +/- for different movements.

is it reasonable to assume the number of winds corresponds to how much 'time' turns in that equal amount of turning of the crown?

for example you wind it 10 turns in the winding position, is it roughly equal to the amount of the 10 turns will advance the minute/hour hands in the adjust time position?

i found different watches to have different "crown turn to time advanced" ratios when at the setting stage....

To my knowledge you cannot overwind a modern automatic movement, impossible… ANyways I usually do 15 and it's enough for it to run and the wrist takes care of winding it more if there is still room...

you see guys that s the reason we need the Reserve de Marche on the dial ,
love that feauture.
to the OP I guess PP suggest only 10winds to save the crownstem gasket-if applicable- otherwise it s not possible to overwind a modern movement.

enjoy your watch

This is what I was told after picking up my 5726. The first ten winds is only to put the correct tension on the springs and stems to avoid any undue stresses while adjusting.

How many winds

Does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll lollipop?

We will never know....

I do 40 winds twice a week out of boredom on my 5164 which I wear everyday except on wednesdays.

Sometimes i set my watch the night before and then i give about 25 to 30 winds. IF i set just before wearing for the day-- about 15 to 20 winds

I have the 5712 and with that one.. who needs to count as you say. I think it takes a lot of winds to get to full. I will count next time i wind it up
