Anyone ever think of taking a break from Watch forums/Instagram accounts, etc?

Has anyone ever thought, or perhaps done this?
I am really considering it.
I find that because I am fairly new in the watch hobby (slightly over a year), I started spending so much time on different forums, educating myself so much.

I had no idea what brand AP was, PP, VC, and I am now able to tell different references on random brands, what movements they use, case size, etc.

Due to getting into it at a relatively late age, currently late 20s and having so much money saved up from my jobs, I have been fortunate enough to buy some really nice watches. I own A few SS Rolexes, an Omega, and a PP Aquanaut.
I already find myself looking for a PM full gold Rolex, or a PP 5711.

I find myself constantly consuming a lot of time with the forums, with instagram accounts, hours and hours obsessing over watches.
I find nice pictures of a reference and bam, I am looking deep into that watch, finding pictures, thinking of which watch to flip, thinking of if I may like another watch better, etc.

I am thinking of just stopping all the forums, the Instagram accounts, and just consuming my time with other things.
I think it will help me enjoy my watches, and be more content, and less obsessive.
I see guys on the Forum that buy 1 watch every few years, and honestly really applaud that kind of patience. I would like to be that way as well.

Has anyone been through this?

Just moderate your life; try reading literature for a change. That works for me.

I did it about a year ago. I unfollowed a bunch of accounts, avoided the forums for a bit, and just enjoyed what I had. Since then, I haven't bought a single watch. I have a watch that a lot of WIS would love to own one day, and I have to appreciate it. I'd love to add a Royal Oak, or Day-Date one day, but until I'm very financially comfortable, there's no need in stressing myself over what's next.

You are just going thru a hobby phase. This is something new to you and you are intrigued. After a while, the heat will die down and you will move your focus onto other things in life.

I spend a lot of time here on TRF and on Instagram, as long as it doesn't have a bad influence on your work performance and you are happy then all is good

I like how you think. It does seem that the break helped you; I think I should benefit from it myself.

I'm sure. I have heard and read of many people that go through something similar.
Luckily non of my pieces will give me a hit should I decide to sell, or my taste changes, etc.
I do need to calm down big time though!

Ummmmm....... I think it all just needs to enjoyed. If you don't enjoy it or stress over it then don't do it. If you have the spare time and enjoy it then go for it.

Yes and I have done so on several occasions.

When you get tired move on and return when you want to.

Yeah, you need to bring balance back and cut back on TRF and watch more proper porn.

I take a break from time to time, but one of the great things about TRF…I really enjoy the user content, and the place becomes an oasis from the day-to-day grind. And I will throw in kudos to the mods for making it that way.

Stumbled in some years ago even before I owned a Rolex . . .

And . . . I was and still are lost . . .

Probably 2 / 3 times (but probably more) that I log in . . . an hour

TRF is great camaraderie

Made some friends here close by and several States away

I've done that before. If you can't handle the pressure of constantly looking at watches without obsessing over buying another and another then maybe a break is what you need. What's great about TRF and almost any forum is you can go on the forum to talk about basically anything. TRF is a great place to hang out to talk about non-watch related topics.

Agree 100%. I find the forums take a lot if time, specially with the forum app on the phone. I deleted the app on the phone to limit the regular updates and subscriptions.

The forums are great to learn about watches, research a potential buy. The negative is that you may never be happy with what you have as you get to see loads of gorgeous watches and wrist shots.

I have a little rule that helps. If I get an urge to buy a watch/car/anything.. l do the research, watch the reviews, and then I stop all the media, youtube reviews, and forums for a couple of weeks. I go for it only if the product still is as appealing. This avoids getting caught up in the buzz and making a rushed purchase.

I am getting ready to take a break. I have a new watch coming tomorrow and I am going to relax for awhile. Been at this watch game for a long while now.

I thought about doing it about 3 months ago. I tried and failed, couldn't stay away.

I came to a conclusion though that helped me with patience. No matter what I'll get, I'll always eventually want something else.

I don't need a break from TRF, I like reading the different points of view, I like looking at the watches, wrist shots, and love most of the jokes posted by members. Then of course I'm happy to lust after the next watch but then I already have a few Rolex and quite content with what I have on hand. I also like the Incoming threads, BTW. So, I am on TRF whenever I feel like it and take a break from it whenever I like.
