Icon5 Buying GMT Solid Gold Unworn in 2nd Hand Shop versus Brand New in AD

Hi guys,

Just like to seek your opinion on getting a full gold GMT from a dealer which is unworn and purchased in April 2015 versus getting brand new from AD.

The cost savings from the dealer is about USD$1400. For this amount would you go for the dealer which I would to have it authenticated or just save the hassle and go for the AD one?

Thanks!

Ehhh that's tough one.
Beat up the grey dealer a bit more and threaten to walk out and see if you can get $2000-$2500 off.

From my AD, I would get between 15 and 20% off on a solid gold piece. $1,400, while not a trivial amount, is not worth the hassle. Shop around as many ADs as you can within an hour of where you live or work; go see them, sit down, try a few pieces on and see who can work out the best deal. Let them know you're buying 'today' for the right deal and see what happens. Good luck

What is that 5% off? I am guessing you could get that from an AD. You should be able to do much better than that from a GMD IMO. Good luck

I think the most I could squeeze out from the dealer would be another $200 or so max

Even though I've never bought that expensive of a piece, I couldn't agree more.

Yes, presuming you are getting around 15-20% off and these are not off retail prices, then I'd go with AD unless difference was 2K.

If buying such an expensive watch at 20+k I think I would pay the additional 1,400 for absolute peace of mind. Also you will get a new 5yr warranty. If the used watch has a date of April won't that still have the old 2 year with the third additional added?

Oh my GOSH I would buy a brand new watch from an AD for that trivial sum. Peace of mind, warranty, and service after the sale are worth VASTLY more than that amount of money, if you can truly afford the watch.

Just my opinion, but there you have it.

Tough one....

Money is still money and savings is savings.

BUT if there is an issue, who will help you best should be the factor that helps you decide what to do.

I would either look for a better deal in the "grey" market or go straight AD. Not worth it for $1k for a pm rolex. $5k, maybe.

$1,400 is worth having a relationship with the AD and a diet Coke

I forgot about the new 5 year warranty! In that case I am pretty sure the AD would be a better deal but seriously Rolex watches are so hardy I don't think it would need a visit in the 5 years if worn and kept properly.
