Older GMT vs Exploer i question/purchase
If you were to spend some money, which would you buy? Im looking at the new 39mm Explorer I or would you spend about the same money and get a Pepsi or Coke GMT? I really want one of the GMT's but they are not new anymore unless you get the new Pepsi. I see some of these mid 90's to early 2000's for about $5500-6500. Which would you spend your money on? anyone got a good recommendation for preowned for a fair price? I was just looking at bobswatches.com Thanks all

No contest in my opinion .. The gmtmaster 16710 was discontinued 2007 and its price can only increase while you are enjoying it

What is your style?
Do you want everyone to know you're wearing a Rolex? Get a Pepsi. Would you rather fly under the radar? Get an Explorer I. At this point in my life I would get the Explorer, but you need to decide for yourself. |

Versatility favors the GMT. It was my first Rolex and remains my go to reference.

New Rolexes can be over rated; sometimes it's hard to hold a candle to the old standards. GMT's the one.

Whether old or new, both watches will last our lifetime. So age is really a non issue.... the 1675 GMT is nicer over the 16710 and wins by a mile over the Explorer imho.

I would get a PEPSI. I really like mine which I bought this month. I like the casual sports watches and the classic vintage look of the 16750. To me the Explorer I looks more dressy even though it was the watch of choice for mountain climbers. Either is a great choice.

16710 Coke is a winner for me. Pick up a full set and it won't lose value. A new explorer I most likely will not retain value. |

I prefer new over old.
But the Explorer does nothing for me. I have the 16710 GMT, Z serial so around 2006. I bought it used 2 years ago for $5500 in amazing condition. The price you listed seems high for older GMTs. Also I know the 16710 has bezels you can change out, I'm not sure about other GMT models. So if that's important to you-and it was to me-do your research. |

As all have mentioned, understated get the Explorer, If you want to change things up GMT
with interchangeable bezels and straps you can have a different watch every day of the week. |

But for the Coke bezel (mine is Pepsi) you have my pair. Love them both; the Explorer for weekdays and the GMT II for weekends. Just a perfect pair.
To the OP - the earlier post about flying under the radar versus screaming Rolex nailed it. I bought the (36mm) Explorer first because I wanted an everyday Rolex that flew under the radar but knew I'd have a Pepsi GMT at some point. |

I have owned both. I sold the 16710 and wear the Explorer most days.

Hmmm, tough one. I have a Pepsi 16710 and 39 mm Explorer ... They're both great watches, however as much as I love the Pepsi, if it's for daily wear, one watch and not part of a collection, I would go with the Explorer all day long. It can be dressed up or down, and is classic, iconic, simplicity at its best.

GMT. I have a 14270 that I never bonded with. Tried different straps, etc. The 16710 Pepsi is my go to watch for any travel occasion.

All seem to be in favor of the GMT. If you were to make a purchase. What reference number would you get and why? What would you look for in purchasing these vintage models?
