Winding

Hello everyone, first post.

My wife has just bought me a beautiful Oyster Perpetual Date Just. I know it's an automatic watch, and I wear it all day, but how often do I need to actually wind it?

I tried after 24 hours and it seemed fairly taught so I didn't push it.

Thanks in advance

You can wind it as much as you want to you cannot over-wind it,once mainspring is fully wound it just slips in the main-spring barrel. But to manual wind a fully stopped watch it needs 40 full 360 degrees crown turns clockwise only. After a full manual wind if worn for around 8 hours plus a day it should keep ticking while off wrist over-night.But will do harm whatsoever to give a full manual wind once a week or so even if worn to keep mainspring at peek power-reserve.

I never wind my automatic watches. If you are active enough you never need to wind it. The power reserve also makes it possible to leave it 50-60h unworn without it stopping.

Try wearing it daily and see if it ever stops. If it does, you are not active enough and need to wind it periodically.

Hi - I'm just along the road from you, in Ponteland - welcome to the forum.

Over the 49 years I've owned my GMT Master I've never manually wound it. I wear it every day and put it on my bedside at night and it just keeps going - occasionally I might not wear it for a day (if I'm doing some gardening, or something) and even then, after 36 hours, it's still running to time. The fact that it's never run down suggests that the daily use I give it is enough to keep the mainspring at sufficient tension. The only time I unscrew the crown is to adjust the hands and wind-on the date when the are fewer than 31 days in the month.

Enjoy your Date Just - it looks beautiful!

Stan.
