My Grail List...Work In Progress

Like many of you I suspect, I have a "Grail List" or informal list of watches I would like to acquire and for specific reasons. I generally break mine down into "this would be nice, but long-range" or in other words not must haves...and those I long for to the point where I must have them.

I admit my list is very history/old-fashioned oriented. I won't go into the pocket watches...that's another list!

Just for fun, here goes.

1. Rolex Submariner. Just acquired my Sub Date 16610 in May and checked this one off the list. I had wanted one as long as I could remember. The quintessential diver, James Bond's first watch in the movies...the Sub is an icon.

2. Omega Speedmaster Professional. The Moon Watch. I haven't decided if I need a pre-moon caliber 321 or if I could live with an 861 or 1861. One of the later models would probably suffice as I intend to wear the heck out of my Moon Watch!

3. Rolex GMT Master. This is another one that I am leaning towards modern first, then perhaps vintage.

4. Doxa orange faced Diver. I'm a Clive Cussler fan, what can I say?

5. Rolex Sea-Dweller. The ultimate diver...so cool it almost hurts. Even after the Deep Sea hits the market, I think my jones will be for the ol' SD.

6. Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin dress watch. I would love to have one example of Haute Horlogerie for special occasions and to just admire. Might go vintage on this one.

7. Vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The model Hemingway mentioned in "Across the River and Into the Trees" made the Rolex reputation early on. Got to have a nice vintage Oyster Perpetual.

Honorable mention

1. Kobold Polar Surveyor. I just like these.

2. Panerai. I am warming to these all the time. Something stainless, plain, with the crown guard would be nice.

Down the road...

I could see myself, given time and budgeting, to acquire some vintage classics like a 1680 and 5513 Subs, etc. A Datejust would also be tres cool.

If you've read this far, thanks for your indulgence. My list is pretty modest by many standards, impossibly over the top by others. It gives me something to think about and work towards. I don't think a collector ever stops collecting until the finish line.

Alas, I am a collector. One good watch should be enough for anybody, right? Okay, two so you have one for when your primary is being serviced...

And then you need that dress watch...

Nice list!

A few years down the road, I'd like to get myself an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in SS with a silver dial.

And if I win the lottery or something, maybe a JLC skeleton or Breguet Tourbillon or a Richard Mille watch. And of course, a Patek Calatrava or Piaget Antiplano.

Good luck with your hunt, Clyde.

I only have one watch on my list now - the Bark Day-Date!

Impressive list. Just keep on ticking the boxes and try not to comprimise otherwise you'll just be selling them on again.
