AP ROC Alinghi City Of Sails, Advice/Info required

Morning AP owners,

I am a new member and hopefully an AP owner very soon.

I am thinking of purchasing an AP City Of Sails Chronograph in Steel, and I just wanted some information and advice.

1. Why was the rrp so high at the time ($50k), is there any manufacturing process or details apart from the dial that justifies the rrp. The movt is standard and not even in-house.

2. Depreciation seems awfully high, I am buying a mint 2003 with box and papers for $11.5k. Is this a model that is not popular because no one wants a 39mm watch as it seems like every manufacturer is making watches above 41mm.

3. If you had a choice would you buy a 41mm ROC or 42mm ROO over a ltd edition 39mm.

Thanks in advance, and have a good day all.

is it possible they have confused the RRP of the gold piece with the steel..?

the only other thing i can think of is in 2003 the USD was stronger vs the CHF and other currencies, would be closer to $30k with today's rates, which is still high for a steel piece, especially in 2003

and no i would go for the 39mm if i had the choice, i think the RO looks better in a smaller size not one that approaches ROO size

You may well be correct but I am having difficulty finding any information on the watch and rrp's. The seller is quoting the $50k rrp and it just seems awfully high for a steel ROC limited to 1250pcs. Any idea where I can get more info?

Thanks for the advice on the size.

There was also a platinum one which was probably 50k.

I just trawled through the forum and you are correct the platinum was $50k and not the steel, the seller is incorrect.

Thanks

The 39mm city of sails is a fantastic piece!! I personally really like that watch!! The size and the fact it is on rubber is a win for me.

Great choice! It is an awesome reference.

I am a big fan of the classic 39mm chronos

Yeah 50K in 2003 for a steel is crazy, so he is mistaken for the PT model… Would like to see pics as all of us here I suppose, post if you can in any case it is a nice watch, if it's in good condition I would do it

The 39mm case will wear more like a 41-42mm "regular" watch because of the case design, so unless you like large watches or have a very large wrist I think you'd be fine. I love the design and the rubber strap. I've seen both claims of 50m WR (typical for 25860/26300/26320) and even 100m WR on some sites so I'm not sure if you get double the WR with this model. The only "downside" I can see going this way is missing out on an AP bracelet. So if the WR is really the same, you could also consider something like a Panda 26300 on a bracelet because it is in that same price range.

Thanks to you all, the advice is invaluable. Might be able shave a few $ of the asking price! Should be able to post some pics soon.
