Buying a Platona
So I think im close to swapping my smurf for a platona (still thinking as i know i will miss the smurf and can't own both, yet)..
Before I make such a BIG decision (huge for me actually), are there any other comparably priced ALange, Patek or others I should at least look at before? I will admit, ive always been a Rolex guy (owned DJ, GMTIIC and the smurf) and don't really know the other brands as well. Every time I start looking at Pateks etc I just dont find them as aesthetically pleasing as Rolex. Any suggestions on another PM watch priced around or below the Platona (BNIB from a trf seller) that I should check out first? The Platona will be my one and only. Thanks!! (this site continues to cost me $$$$$)

The obvious choice is the lange Datograph but it's not a watch you can wear for a swim etc. Sounds like you're a rolex guy and that's just fine. Grab the platona!
Other options :5990/1a from patek |

Possible alternative to consider - Patek 5980/1R chrono with date slightly higer retail price than Platona but will be more $$$ than Platona from TRF seller. Congrats in advance on the new incoming!

The Dato and the 5990 as Tom mentioned... I'll add the 44mm Platty AP (26401po) and the PP 5980.

I suggest you keep
The smurf. If it's that big of a swap, and you love the smurf, keep it.

The 116619 is very nice, but then again so is the pt. Daytona. I guess it boils down to if you want a diver's bezel or chronograph. For a one and only watch I would look no further than the Oyster case.

So, I really like the Platona. I used to think "why get a precious metal Rolex when you can get something from one of the 'holy trinity' brands." However, I have come to truly appreciate what a pm rolex feels like on your wrist, and it's a feeling like no other.
As someone who collects AP and FPJ, I say that if the Platona sings to you the most, then that's what you must go for. However, if you're asking me what watch you could consider as an alternative, my favorite sport watch in the world right now is the Patek 5164a. But, again, just a personal preference. |

won't that cost as much as the smurf in cash to get the Platona? that's a lot of green!

It's not a PM watch but i would take a look on the Patek 5960/1A. I think the annual calendar to be a very useful complication to be had in a one and only watch, even more when paired with a chronograph.
Besides that, i think this Patek is a very beautiful watch that suits well all ocasions. |

Patek has some annual calendar chronos that are beautiful and sporty, but much less versatile as an only watch.
Like someone posted above, There's nothing wrong with being a Rolex guy. Sometimes we stray from our personal preferences towards a choice that seems to be a general consensus, only to revert back to what we really wanted all along with the added cost... having said that, I think the smurf is the perfect gold all-rounder - and that blue... Good luck with your choice. Ps. Seth has a very good point. If you love the smurf and flip it for a Platona, chances are you will regret getting rid of it. |

I say Platona or bust...although that is pretty easy for me to say, since it is not my cash!

then it is simple just foot the bill and buy the platona. keep in mind there are two dial variations. most go with ice blue brown but there is an ice blue ice blue on the sec, min and hour surrounds.

Get the plantona ultimate everyday watch. Its not super flashy like a yellow gold but to the trained eye its a very high end respectable watch. Also it will hold its value in case you have to unload it.

It's very nice, and the diamond markers work on it (and I'm typically not a diamonds-on-my-watch kind of guy). I think one (or a few) fellow TRF members have this version. I've seen it at an AD...very nice, but in the end, I went the non-diamond route.

The Platona is beautiful and I've longed for it for such a long time then thankfully the SS ceramic Daytona has now been announced and my Platona itch has completely gone - it is a beautiful watch truely sensational there is also the Patek 5960p used or as new in certain dial colours that is also stunning or at that price circa £50k quite possible to get a used Patek 3970 g/j or even a Patek 5110p with a Patek 3940g/j both ..... You have lots of options open to you but the Platona or Patek are best choices. Good luck please let us know what you decide can't wait to see incoming.

Keep the 116619 and use the cash to buy the new Daytona C. You'll probably even have some $$ left. Put your name on a list and wait.
In the end, you'll still have a PM but you'll also own a pretty neat Daytona. Two watches in the end.
