Is a 20% deposit reasonable for the Daytona C?

Called my AD this morning and he told me the new Daytona will be $12,500. He is asking for a 20% deposit to get on the waiting list. I would be #5. He is willing to give me a 3% discount since it will be a cash deal. Do you think $2,500 is too much for a deposit with an unknown delivery date? I have read other treads and it seems people are just put on a list or giving a $1,000 deposit. Just wanted some feedback from other members that have been added to the Daytona wait list.

If I was guaranteed 5th I would. At Wempe people are offering to pay in full ( heck I even offered to pay in full) and they said they couldn't as they don't even know the allocation of the units.

Yes it is reasonable it lets the AD know you are serious about the purchase. Helps them weed out people who are not serious. If you are a well known respected customer of that AD I would not expect to have to pay a deposit tho.

Reasonable as long as it is in writing.

I bought my BLNR from AD and I have referred my friends to them. I was surprised on the 20% and was expecting $1,000 or 10%. Allocation is unknown so shipping could be at the end of the year or next year.

If your AD holding 20% of the cost is enough of a financial discomfort for you to be concerned about perhaps you should not be getting a new watch at this time. Please understand I do not mean for this to sound rude :). My AD required no down payment but I would gladly pay 100% to show I'm serious.

Some people like to put their name on a list at multiple AD and the 20% also helps remove these people.

The wierd thing about Bay Area ADS is they all say that and dont know when some say July and some say October. I would try a couple more ADs first and if not then go back to this one. You may want to try Fourtane in Carmel

I called to preorder the Daytona at a boutique in Ontario, Canada. Manager put me first on the waiting list with no deposit, expected time he gave was October - November.

Is he willing to put the $12,500 asking price in writing? Then jump on it... who knows what the final price will be if price increase happens whilst you wait!

Not like they are going to have any issues if someone on the list backs out.

IMHO, more than $1,000 is unreasonable. Plus there should be some guarantee of the price, such as "initial list price", even if it takes them a year to get it to you and the price goes up.

Friend of mine had that issue with a car, he put down a big deposit and when it came out, it was in such high demand that the dealer doubled the price. He told them where to put it.

i'm going through the same exercise on the new AK with my indy AD...

$2500 seems reasonable but if the AD is an indy, i'd get some type of bill of sale and use a credit card for the deposit only, which will be refunded when you pay in full, in cash on arrival. they'll simply put the $2500 back on your card and they'll be refunded the interchange fee.

reason being, if the AD goes under in say, 3 - 6 months, you're out the $2500 cash with no recourse.

fwiw, you may also want to give back the 3% and use a credit card which you can pay off the next day. many cards offer to double a manufactuer warranty (10 years!) and points on $12500 could be better than the 3% adjustment.

my 2¢ and congrats!

Your AD has confirmed news that the official Daytona price is $12,500 USD? I have called a few places and no one can give me a straight answer on the price because they don't know yet.

Same here with the Wynn Rolex Boutique in Vegas....who I'm on "the list" with.....if it was me personally and I was within top 5 on the list, I'd gladly put $$ where my mouth is.

My AD has 2 reps at Basel and he received a text the USD is $12,500 but I have read on the boards by others that it is $12,400 +/- $100 is not going to make a difference. I think it's a great deal at this price.

$12.5k --- $13.5k .... would a thousand dollar msrp difference here or there really cancel a sale on this much anticipated reference?

(i didn't think so)

I've never put a deposit on any watch.

I've never put my name on a list.

Amazing, I still get the new model watches quickly from my ADs.

Hmmm....

Yeah wtheck, it is not a house what you are buying. Anyway what i usually do is to wait for the second batch of watches, no deposit, no imperfections and i get at least 5%off. They always give discount even in the sub. I tried yesterday even though the guy said that model sells like hotcakes. 5% i still walked away trf is better price... They called me today and say the manager authorized a 10% if it is a cash purchase... Now we are talking.

I feel that 20% is reasonable as it lets the AD know that the buyer is serious. I feel a lot of people called to be on a waiting list who arnt as serious as others.

How?

Never said anything about deposits.

And for lists I said dealers know who they are giving the watches to when they arrive no list needed. But thanks for playing as usual HorologyK...always so insightful.

It's all relationships--nothing more or less.

Hmmm....

I'm not sure how I feel about it. If I was the AD, decided start wait lists and take deposits at all, it would depend on how many I could expect to receive at a time. Say it is one of each. I'd let my customers know that a 20% deposit would be required when they are next up. If they don't want to pay it at that time they get scratched and I go to the next names on each list. Repeat as necessary.

But I'm not sure I'd even take deposits. The ones that aren't serious will get weeded out with a simple phone call. I would simply tell my customers up front that once notified of arrival they would have x number of days to pay for it. They don't pay for it - scratched - next guy gets his shot at it. Everyone knows the rules.

No call for a deposit, if someone backs out, there are more than enough buyers to take up his allocation. Give the AD a couple of thousand dollars for a watch that he can't tell you the price and can't guarantee he can deliver to you? Four to eight months from now, maybe? Really? You are smart enough to earn the money in the first place, why the change?
