5227r vs Lange 1

Hey guys,

Tried both these on today, 5227 was the most instant hit, however am conscious of it being very $$ for what it is.

Enjoyed the case finishing on the lange 1 and movement finishing.
Dial not so much.

Collection includes.
5167a
116710

Thoughts?

Two top brands and many will give the edge to L&S for their finish.

Automatic v Manual?

Personally and I am not saying this because of which forum it is on, but the 5227 for me.

I do not like Roman Numerals. if it had plain batons, then my decision would be harder to.

But whatever you decide, you will be assured of owning a fabulous timepiece.

Nice play to be :)

If you dont like the dial of the Lange, then the Patek is the obvious choice as its the dial you'll spend the most time looking at.

With this choice the Lange. PP bit boring! Think my grandad had a watch that looked like that!

+1. If you don't like the Lange 1 dial as much than the Patek is the way to go. Personally I'm a big fan of the Lange 1 so I like it better than the 5227.

Honestly neither of those two would be for me. But if it has to be one of those two, the Lange. Be sure to buy at the correct price however....

X3 it's really not even worth questioning.

The L1 dial is certainly unique and not for everyone.

How about the saxonia moonphase?

The 5227r for me. Based on your collection, it would be a very nice dress watch. I tried Mike's on at our last GTG. It's truly incredible. Also, I saw a used one on Chrono24 for around $23,500 USD or so. The hinged display back is a deal maker for me. My only reservations is the tang buckle instead of a deployment buckle.

Also for about 1/7 of the price this was pretty surprising.

My reservation with the 5227 is the same movement architecture as my 5167.

Lange good PR, manual wind, big date, however dial colour that as exciting IMHO.

Maybe you should look beyond only those two brands?
No point forcing yourself to buy the Lange because it’s got a very nicely decorated movement, nor the Patek because it’s a Patek and hard to justify the cost.

Unless there’s some rush to spend the money burning a hole in your pocket, take your time and look at other brands offering a similar style, and for the sort of money you’d be more comfortable with spending.

Patek make some nice watches, but they’re by no means the only ones capable of doing so.

As much as I love Lange, 5227 edges it for me.

However, considering the fact that you have 5167 in your collection, which shares the same calibre as 5227, it might be worth diversifying your collection? (although aesthetically and practically 5167a and 5227R are very different..)

Just my 2 cents.

I would choose the GS of the 3 if that is the style you are going for seiko makes an excellent example by any standard.

I like many of the ALS but can not find joy in the miniature dial of the Lange 1.

Ps agree about the Patek 324 movement, I wouldn't want two watches with that same movement.

I just find the Calatrava's a little too "meh!" and predictable to get me excited by them.

The Lange 1 has been an excitingly different watch since it was introduced - asymmetric dial, big date, 3/4 plate hand wound movement with traditional German watchmaking at its core.

There are now enough variations of the Lange 1 to suit everyone - different metals, different size cases, different complications, different dial colors. It's worth a trip to a Boutique just to see all the different options.

I agree with what Gus said 100%. I would definitely want a different movement and the GS is a great substitute for that style. Otherwise I would look for a different Patek.

How about the Lange 1 Moonphase? The dial is more interesting than the normal one. I went that way and have never looked back - for me there is no watch that can top it.

This if possible, love the iconic twin dial set up and big date.

Between the Lange 1 and 5227, I'd go 5227

Quick update:

Tried to buy the lange Today but I just didn't love it, the way the lange 1 sat on my wrist was a little off and I still couldn't fall in love with the dial colour against the RG case and hands.

Also tried 1815 up down, saxonia AC and while I enjoyed the AC it is too far above the budget to consider.

I keep coming back to the 5227. The organic case shape and cream dial just worked.

Just trying to bring the 45k aud price down to a fair level.

No AD here wants to Budge.

The issue i have with the 5227 is that it get's close to the price of the annual calendar models (5205, 5396, 5146) and I like that complication a lot. Though the black dial 5227 is a beauty too.
