A beginner when it comes to watches (from London)

Hello. I'm from London and I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to buying expensive watches (no, let me rephrase that: I'm a total beginner!), but I'm retired now so I thought, what the hell -- I may as well spend my money on something I like.
Being a beginner, the only expensive watch I've ever heard of is Rolex, so that's what lead me here. I've been nosing around London at all the jewellery shops and I found a place in Burlington Arcade that sells second-hand Rolex watches. And after I feinted at the prices (thousands of pounds for a second-hand watch????) I have half-decided to buy one.

In fact... I've already got my heart set on buying one. But it's a lot of money so I really want to shop around and talk to different shops. So I was wondering, is there anyone from London here who can recommend a few shops that sell second-hand Rolexes? (Im sure you're supposed to call them 'vintage', or something, instead of second-hand!) I am thinking of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona... primarily because it seems to be the most famous one (like I said... I'm a beginner... so I've just gone straight for the famous one).

By the way: I'm not planning on being a collector of different watches. This will be my one and only watch. So I really want to get it right and talk to as many shops as possible. I don't want a jewellery shop staffed by spotty students on 10% commission -- I would quite like a proper old watch shop with experienced old gents behind the counter, who know what they are talking about

Any good shop recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome and good luck choosing. Be careful on the secondary market, there are lots of fakes. Only buy from highly regarded sellers with a great reputation.

Enjoy the hobby. It's infectious. I know the shop you are referring to and well it carries Burlington prices! Half the fun of a new watch us the hunt...so look carefully, enjoy the research and best of luck

I have bought Rolex from Watchcentre (.com) 74 New Bond Street a couple of times last year and would definitely buy from them again. They have a good selection and they will haggle on prices. Enjoy the hunt

welcome to the forum ,,, trusted sellers here are great , but try on lots before you decide , read lots , think lots , then do it all over again , till you find what it is that you want , as opposed to what you think you should have ,, then read lots more , hunt lots more , ask a lot more questions ,,, then start buying , but
one is seldom enough.

Hi. Thanks for all the replies!
I tried popping into a shop after spending a few weeks walking past and window shopping, and I realised pretty quickly that I was out of my depth - I think I will be doing some more research on this site.
The gentleman certainly knew what he was talking about, but the problem was... i didn't!

i have looked down Bond Street. They all seem to have bouncers on the door -- some of them looked like they could have been ex-members of the SAS! -- so I think I will have to a least put a shirt and suit on before I try going in one of those places

You could...but I still get infinite, childish pleasure in visiting the Patek Salon in my shorts at shirt!
