My Explorer

May need some help. I have an Oyster Perpetual Explorer Super Precision. The S/N is 3700XX (left the last 2 digits off on purpose) Model 5500. Pics to follow. It has an orange cross hatch dial on white. The Rolex crown at 12 o'clock and numerals a 3, 6 and 9. Screw in crown and Jubilee band. Now the question. All the explorer info states they started manufacture in 1950, yet my S/N indicates 1945/6.

I plan on taking it to the jeweller and getting pics of thwe movement and any signatures. The watch has been in the family as long as I can remember.

Please help if you can

Welcome

A photo would certainly help. When people speak of Explorers they generally refer to the black dial variety. Do you know if your watch originally came from Canada, as there were different name models released at various times for the Canadian market and it might be that yours falls into that category.

Welcome to the Forum

In 1950 Rolex started their numbering system all over again..

Your serial would place your watch at about 1955/56. What they did to ensure no confusion was to stamp the date inside the case-back. If you take it off lyou will probably see a mark such as II 56, for a watch made in the second quarter of 1956.

Your's sounds like one of the early Explorer badged Air-Kings....

Nice watch..
