Daytona Question

I recently saw a picture of a Rolex daytona up for sale on EBay. The bezel was spun around, so that the "60" was not on top. Isn't this bezel fixed? If the bezel is not properly aligned, this should be a warning sign of a problem, no?

Welcome aboard, Nola!

The bezel of the Daytona is not graded in minute markings as it is in the Sub; instead it is marked as a tachymeter. The markings should not say 10, 20 30 and so on, but should start from 400, decreasing in a clockwise direction and unevenly marked. If it looks like a diving watch's bezel, it can't be the real thing.

Hi Nola,

Welcome to TRF. Here's what a real Daytona bezel should look like. Anything different, must be a POS FAKE!!

Cheers - JJ

Thanks to all. I've been wearing the same blue dial ss/gold submariner for 17 years now. My son has always admired it, and I have decided to give it to him (a surprise) as a college graduation gift next month. I can swap off between my Omega Moonwatch Chrono and a Breitling Colt but thought I'd replace it with a Daytona. Having looked at that Sub a hundred times a day for all those years, I'm quite familiar with it, but wasn't sure about the Daytona. Looking around for a reasonable price on a used and saw this one, but was suspect due to the bezel issue. Thanks again.

One more questionn I hope someone can answer. It has become evident to me that Daytonas come in different movements, the latest ("In-House" I think), and I have seen a few Zenith movement watches for sale. Is there a serious downside to the Zenith movement that I should know about, or any other caveat as to earlier movements that should be considered before
purchase? Love to buy new, but probably isn't going to be practical. Thanks.,

Well myself prefer the dial lay out on the Zenith movement Daytona. As for the movement its one of the more highly regarded chronograph movements The Zenith "El Primero" running at 36000 bph,it was so highly regarded it was used by Rolex in the Daytona for more than a decade, albeit slowed to 28800 bph. Rolex didn't stop using the Zenith because they had developed their own movement, they stopped using it because Zenith couldn't/wouldn't supply in greater quantity. And Rolex HAD to make their own Chrono movement before they used chrono movements from ETA Valjoux. The Zenith calibre 3019 was introduced in 1969 and still used today in several brands today, unmodified 36000 bph. And I'm pretty sure if there were problems with the hi-beat movements, 35 years is long enough for them to manifest themselves,a rock solid reliable movement. And IMO the Zenith S.S Daytona will be quite collectable in the future.

Very nice example Allan, not a real lover of gold in watches, but would sooner pay for a T/Tone at list prices, that the over-inflated prices for a S.S Daytona.

Thanks, padi, and again I couldn't agree more about the outlandish prices for a SS Daytona. I get GOLD, and still pay a heck of a lot less. And the "El Primero" movement is a keeper, for sure.

BTW, nice bit of editing on your post that I quoted, AND the quote in my post!

Let me add my welcome to TRF, Nola. Glad you found our friendly little madhouse. Stick around and jump right in.

As for the Daytona, most of the others have answered your questions. The only thing I will add is the way to tell the difference between the in-house and Zenith movements is the location of the 3 and 9 subdials. On the Zenith movement, the dials are centered on the diameter between the 3 and 9 (see Prince's pic). On the in-house movement, the dial centers are raised a mm or so above the diameter (see JJ's pic). Otherwise, both are rock solid movements, worthy of the Rolex name.

Good luck on your quest. If you want the cat's meow in Daytona's check out the WG Meteorite with black (or brown) deployment strap.
